HBO has released the first look at Matthew Rhys in the upcoming Perry Mason limited drama series. Rhys looks very much like he stepped back in time to 1931 Los Angeles in the image. The series is based on the detective novels by Erle Stanley Gardner, which feature Mason as a criminal defense lawyer. Excitement about the show has been strong ever since HBO first announced that it was in development, which was nearly four years ago. With our first image here, we can't be too far away from seeing the first trailer for the series.

Debuting in 2020, Perry Mason is set in 1931 Los Angeles. While the rest of the country struggles through the Great Depression, this city is booming! Oil! Olympic Games! Talking Pictures! Evangelical Fervor! And a child kidnapping gone very, very wrong! Based on characters created by Erle Stanley Gardner, this limited series follows the origins of American Fiction's most legendary criminal defense lawyer, Perry Mason. When the case of the decade breaks down his door, Mason's relentless pursuit of the truth reveals a fractured city and just maybe, a pathway to redemption for himself.

Perry Mason stars Matthew Rhys as the titular character, John Lithgow, Tatiana Maslany, Chris Chalk, Juliet Rylance, Shea Whigham, Nate Corddry, Veronica Falcon, Andrew Howard, Jefferson Mays, Robert Patrick, Stephen Root, Gayle Rankin, Lili Taylor, and Justin Kirk. Avengers: Endgame star Robert Downey Jr. was originally set to take on the lead role, but he had to back out. However, the actor is still on board as an executive producer on the series.

HBO first revealed plans to make a potential new Perry Mason series back in 2016. It was going to be written by True Detective's Nic Pizzolatto. It is believed that the series was a passion project for Robert Downey Jr., who also at one time was thinking of making a movie about the iconic defense attorney. Pizzolatto later shifted his focus to True Detective Season 3. Regardless, it looks like HBO held on to everything and is now preparing to release the miniseries.

While we have our first look at the Perry Mason, HBO has yet to announce an official release date. But, the network may be getting ready to drop a trailer that reveals the premiere date at the same time. Hopefully that happens in the next few weeks. Ron Fitzgerald and Rolin Jones serve as showrunners on the new Perry Mason series. Amanda Burrell, Robert Downey Jr., Susan Downey, Ron Fitzgerald, Joe Horacek, Rolin Jones, Tim Van Patten (also Director of multiple episodes) are executive producers. The show is co-executive produced by Aida Rodgers. Star Matthew Rhys is also on board as a producer.
