Showtime has released a new trailer for Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. The sequel series is continuing the legacy that the original Penny Dreadful left behind, but with a new story and a new cast. That effectively makes this more of an anthology series at this point. Different though it may be, based on this new trailer, the new series will feel right at home alongside its predecessor, as Satan has arrived in Los Angeles.

The trailer kicks off with cops showing up at various crime scenes as some ominous voiceover rings in the background. There is some grizzly imagery and, due to the nature of the crimes at hand, racial tensions, as well as tensions with law enforcement, arise in the city. Things really heat up when Natalie Dormer's character arrives on screen, decked in all black, just as a religious devotee shouts, "Satan is here." Things get decidedly dark from there. The show looks massive in scale and, above all, violent.

John Logan, who served as the creator, writer and executive producer of the original, returns for Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. The revival was originally announced in November 2018. For many viewers, Penny Dreadful, which ran for three seasons between 2014 and 2016, ended its run too soon. The show starred Eva Green, Josh Hartnett and Timothy Dalton. Taking place in the late 1800s, the series dealt with fictional characters such as Frankenstein and Dorian Grey in new ways. Logan, during the TCAs, explained that the sequel series will not be connected in any way to the original though.

"As fond as I am about that series, that was a complete novel. It closed at the end, appropriately with that story, that poetic sad story we were telling."

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels is set in 1938 Los Angeles at a time filled with social and political tension. The show centers on Detective Tiago Vega and his partner Lewis Michener, who are investigating a grisly murder that shocks the city. Soon, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart. The two officers of the law become tangled up in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles, from building of the city's first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore. It even covers the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism.

The cast also includes Nathan Lane, Kerry Bishe, Rory Kinnear, Adriana Barraza, Michael Gladis, Jessica Garza, Johnathan Nieves. Lorenza Izzo, Adam Rodriguez, Amy Madigan, Brent Spiner, Lin Shaye, Thomas Kretschmann, Dominic Sherwood and Ethan Peck. It's not clear yet if this is intended to be a one-and-done, or if this new tale will continue for multiple seasons. Much of that will certainly depend on how well the show is received. Penny Dreadful: City of Angels is set to premiere on April 26 on Showtime. Be sure to check out the new trailer for yourself.
