The Lonely Island has unveiled the first full-length trailer for PEN15. The Hulu series launches at the beginning of next month and judging from the trailer, it looks pretty weird and hilarious. The show features Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle playing 13-year old versions of themselves in the year 2000 where dial up internet was king and the American Pie movies still had the original cast. PEN15 is executive produced by Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone, who are better known as The Lonely Island.
The PEN15 trailer is equal parts hilarious and uncomfortable, building from the teaser that was released in December. The series shows Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle, who are both 31-years old but playing 13, as they try and navigate seventh grade. There's talks of puberty, school crushes, shaving your legs, masturbation, first kisses, and the AOL dial up internet. There are plenty of cringeworthy moments that many can relate to having gone through middle school during the early 2000s or at any time.
PEN15 is described as middle school as it really happened. Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle are surrounded by actual 13-year-olds, which makes everything seem even weirder, but in the best possible way. Hulu ordered 10 episodes of the comedy and they will all be available to stream on February 8th. The streaming platform picked up the show based on the strength of the 15-minute pilot that Erskine and Konkle created with Sam Zvibleman in addition to the backup scripts that they provided. After the pilot was green lit, production started quickly last summer, knocking out all 10 episodes.
PEN15 has been in development for quite a while, so it's cool to see that it's officially happening at Hulu. Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle didn't really meet in junior high, but they did meet junior year of college in New York and have been friends ever since. The two bonded over their love of dark comedy and a desire to stay in New York. However, they ended up in Los Angeles where they planned to make a web series, which they did. But they wanted to make something bigger and PEN15 was born after attending a party where a bunch of people from middle school were in attendance.
After attending the fateful party, it had Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle talking about being 13-years old and the floodgates opened. Sam Zvibleman says that his experience as a 13-year old was pretty dull when compared to the experiences that Konkle and Erskine went through, so they focused on that aspect, pushing the boundaries on subjects that aren't usually shown on screen for young women. Along with the comedy, both actresses are infusing their personal stories in the show too. The result is PEN15 and it looks like it will be pretty popular, just like the real club, upon its release next month. You can watch the trailer below, thanks to the Hulu YouTube channel.
