That's going to be a wrap for Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj on Netflix, as the streamer has put an end to the political satire talk show after a two year run on the service. With Hasan Minhaj serving as the host, the series was created and executive produced by Minhaj and Prashanth Venkataramanujam. Jim Margolis, Michelle Caputo, Shannon Hartman, and Jennie Church-Cooper also executive produced. Since 2018, the series has run for 39 episodes across six seasons, with its final episode debuting back in June. Now, Minhaj says that the acclaimed show has reached the end of its road on Netflix.
"What a run. Patriot Act has come to an end," Minhaj posted in a tweet on Tuesday. "I got to work with the best writers, producers, researchers, and animators in the game. My 2 babies were born and grew up with the show. TY to Netflix and everyone who watched. Now it's time to return these screens to Best Buy."
Using his unique brand of comedy, Minhaj used Patriot Act to explore the modern cultural and political landscape with depth and sincerity." Maybe part of the reason why it was axed is that there just weren't enough subscribers tuning in to the comedy series. Per Metacritic, the series pulled in mostly favorable reviews, so it seems like most people who were watching were satisfied. The show also won a Peabody Award as well as an Emmy for Outstanding Motion Design. Time Magazine also recognized the series last year when it acknowledged Minhaj as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
During its short lifespan, Patriot Act was not immune to its own controversy. Last year, an episode of the show was removed by Netflix from its Saudi Arabia library due to remarks made by Minhaj about the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Although the streamer claimed that the removal was part of a response to a "valid legal request," Minhaj probably ruffled some feathers at the company when he criticized the decision. "Clearly, the best way to stop people from watching something is to ban it, make it trend online, and then leave it up on YouTube," he said at the time.
Netflix is well known for axing shows seemingly far too soon, so this news isn't particularly shocking. Earlier this year, the streamer also announced that Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was getting the boot as well, with its final episodes debuting later this year. Some of the other shows to get canceled at Netflix this year included Astronomy Club: The Sketch Show, Turn Up Charlie, V-Wars, and October Faction. Every other show on the service is liable to join them at any time.
Given the show's acclaim, chances are Minhaj is going to bounce back quickly, despite the cancelation of the series. Maybe now he can focus on developing his next comedy special, following the 2017 release of his first special Homecoming King on Netflix. The announcement of Patriot Act getting canceled comes to us from Hasan Minhaj on Twitter.
