In a not-so-surprising move, Netflix has officially renewed Outer Banks. The hit young adult series debuted earlier this year and proved to be a big success for the streaming service. As such, the Pogues will be returning for season 2. Unfortunately, for the time being, little has been revealed by way of official details. But the important thing for fans of the show is that it will indeed be coming back. The news was confirmed by Netflix in a tweet.

"Outer Banks has been renewed for Season 2!"

A poster for Outer Banks season 2 was included with the tweet. It doesn't reveal too much, but we can see the ocean and a bit of an island beach through the lettering in the center. The cast for the series includes Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, Rudy Pankow, Austin North, Drew Starkey, Deion Smith and Charles Esten. All of them are set to return for season 2. While Netflix doesn't reveal ratings information, generally speaking, the series dominated the top 10 on the service for weeks after its release. It currently holds a 71 percent critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, to go along with an 86 percent audience score.

Outer Banks is a coming of age story. It centers on a tight-knit group of teens, known as the "Pogues," in the beach vacation destination in North Carolina. A hurricane kills the power for the summer season, which sets off a chain of illegal activity. These friends are forced to make life-altering decisions as a result. This leads to a search for a missing father, forbidden romances, a high-stakes treasure hunt, and the escalating conflict between the Pogues and their rivals. Their summer is unexpectedly filled with mystery and adventure.

The bingeable series is produced by Jonas Pate, Josh Pate and Shannon Burke. They will all be returning as showrunners and producers for season 2. During an interview following the premiere of season 1, Pate explained some of what they were hoping to do with the show, should they be afforded the chance to continue. Pate said they would want to continue with the sense of "un and mystery and friendship and adventure." He also said that they would be heading to The Bahamas in the beginning of season 2.

The big question now is when Outer Banks season 2 will arrive on Netflix. That is difficult to answer. While some productions have managed to get going again following the shutdown, it has been a slow process. It is also an ever-evolving one. So it will really depend on how soon the creative team can get the scripts together, and when Netflix can safely proceed with filming. At this point, it seems late 2021 at the earliest would be a reasonable expectation. We'll be sure to keep you posted as any further details are made available. You can check out the poster for yourself from the official Netflix Twitter account.
