Ewan McGregor is finally coming back to the Star Wars universe. Disney and Lucasfilm officially announced at the D23 Expo that McGregor will be starring in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+TV show. A movie was in development for a number of years, but the actor never confirmed if he would be the actor to take on the role. However, after the perceived box office failure of Solo: A Star Wars Story, Disney and Lucasfilm decided to slow down on their releases and put the Obi-Wan movie on hold.
Before being officially announced at D23, Earlier this year, whispers about a possible Obi-Wan series for Disney+ started to make the rounds, but again nothing was ever confirmed by the studio or Ewan McGregor. Then, last week, the rumors started to spread again, this time adding that the official announcement was going to be made at the D23 Expo in Anaheim this weekend and it looks like that intel was right on the money. With that being said, details surrounding the series are still unclear, but it's nice to finally have confirmation. (Insert specific details here)
Star Wars fans have been waiting to see Ewan McGregor back on any screen as Obi-Wan Kenobi for nearly 20 years now. The actor appeared in the prequels, 1999's The Phantom Menace, 2002's Attack of the Clones, and 2005's Revenge of the Sith. While never confirming a possible return, McGregor was always open to coming back to the franchise if the studio ever came calling, which gave fans hope over the years and also inadvertently led to speculation and rumor at the same time.
The Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series is the third live-action Star Wars series to join the upcoming streaming service. Jon Favreau's The Mandalorian is the first and is already completed. The show will launch with the streaming service in November and from the looks of things, the studio did not cut any corners while making it. The second announced live-action series is the Rogue One prequel show. Diego Luna and Alan Tudyk are back to reprise their roles from the successful spin-off movie and the show is all set to debut in 2021, exclusively on the Disney streaming platform. The show is described as "a rousing spy thriller will explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire."
The Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series will be Ewan McGregor's second major television role after winning a Golden Globe for his work on FX's Fargo series. However, this will be a much bigger role for Star Wars fans to get into and hopefully we'll get some more information in regard to specifics surrounding the show soon. For now, fans can celebrate knowing that Ewan McGregor is officially coming back for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. The official Star Wars site was the first to report on the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series.
