Nicki Minaj is trading in her microphone for the small screen as she plans a new ABC Family sitcom. The show will be set in the early 90s, and will revolve around the young life of the rap superstar and her colorful family. The show, which is not yet titled, will track her rise to stardom. ABC Family has already secured a series commitment for the half hour comedy.

Nicki Minaj is no stranger to TV. She previously served as a judge on American Idol for one season. She is set to executive producer her own biographical comedy show, and will make a number of appearances throughout its first season. The show will be a single-camera series. At this time, it isn't known if Nicki Minaj will appear in wraparounds as herself, introducing each episode. Or if she will be playing a character in the life of young Nicki.

Production on the Nicki Minaj ABC Family sitcom will begin this winter. Shooting is taking place in Queens, New York. Scenes will be shot on location, where the rapper lived with her family after emigrating from Trinidad. It was in Queens that the musician underwent a personal and musical evolution. It was this time period that led to her becoming known as a household name. The series will be edgy, but still appeal to family audiences.

Kate Angelo, who wrote the movie Sex Tape and episodes of Will & Grace, penned the pilot. She will continue writing for the show, and will executive produce the half-hour comedy alongside Nicki Minaj. Aaron Kaplan, Stella Bulochnikov and Brian Sher and Gee Roberson will also executive producer. About the series, Nicki Minaj stated the following

"This is one of the more unique adventures I've ever embarked on. I couldn't be more proud and excited to team up with an amazing group of people to give the world something really special."

It isn't known when The Nicki Manaj Show will debut on ABC Family. An early 2016 premiere is expected. No other casting has been announced at this time, but we can expect to see at least a few cameos from other well-known musicians. What do you think? Will you watch the Nicki Minaj show?
