Netflix has announced their year-end top ten list of original TV shows. Unsurprisingly, Stranger Things season 3 came out on top. The hit series from the Duffer Brothers premiered in July and had long-time fans indoors over the 4th of July holiday weekend to binge the entire season. While the number one spot is unsurprising, the streaming giant did not provide concrete numbers for their stats. This is how Netflix has conducted its business practices in the past.

Netflix measures the popularity of its content by counting the total number of households to stream a specific title for "at least two minutes during the first 28 days of its release." This makes it hard to compare the numbers with that of traditional network television. As for the shows that have not been on for 28 full days, the streaming platform uses projections to estimate its total amount of households viewing the shows.

Following Stranger Things season 3 is The Witcher, which just premiered on December 20th. This means that Netflix is using projections based on the first 8 to 10 days of data they had before making their top ten of 2019 list. The Henry Cavill-starring show has received mixed reviews, but fans of the source material seem to be responding well to it, even though it doesn't follow a specific storyline from the books or video games. Out of all original titles, including movies, The Witcher is at number six, while Stranger Things as at number two, just behind Murder Mystery.

As for the third spot, that goes to The Umbrella Academy season 1. The series, which is based on a comic book series of the same name, was an instant hit amongst fans. Season 2 is currently in development. Dead to Me took the fourth spot in Netflix's top ten shows of 2019. The series stars Christina Applegate and a season 2 is on the way, thanks to the popularity of season 1. You season 2 came in at number five after a successful relaunching.

When They See Us, Unbelievable, Sex Education, 13 Reasons Why season 3, and Raising Dion rounded out Netflix's top ten of 2019's most popular shows. Even though The Witcher was just released, fans are already looking forward to season 2, though the wait is going to be pretty long. The same can be said for Stranger Things season 4, which will more than likely premiere next year, unless the Duffer Brothers are able to get it together for a late 2020 release. 2020 will ultimately prove to be a much different year for Netflix with Disney+ and Apple bringing their own original content to the masses.
