The Game of Thrones fan community is in mourning today, with one of the show's stars passing away. Neil Fingleton, the United Kingdom's tallest man who played the giant Mag the Mighty on Game of Thrones, died at the age of 36. The actor, who stood 7 feet 7 inches tall, passed away from heart failure in his hometown of Burnham, England. Here's what the organization known as the Tall Persons Club had to say about the actor's passing in a statement.
"Sadly it has come to our attention that Neil Fingleton, Britain's Tallest Man, passed away on Saturday. Neil became Britain's Tallest Man in 2007 passing the height of Chris Greener. Neil started off in basketball in the USA before becoming an actor and starring in the X-men first class and also recently in the Game of Thrones. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family."
The Guardian reported the news earlier today, with Sky News also reporting that the actor's agent, Kenneth Earle, revealed that the actor had an accident around a year ago when he fell out of bed. The accident landed him in the hospital for a week, but he made a full recovery. It isn't known if this accident had any bearing on his passing. It isn't known when memorial services will be planned, or if they will be open to the public.
The late actor's credits also include 47 Ronin, Jupiter Ascending and an episode of Doctor Who. He was born on December 18, 1980, in Durham, England and was one of the 25 tallest men in the world, measuring in at 7 feet, 7.56 inches. At 16, he moved to the United States for high school to play basketball, graduating from Holy Name Central Catholic High School in 2000. He helped his team to the Central Massachusetts Division I title as well as a berth in the 1999 Massachusetts final game, and a 22-4 record. He played professionally in the 2004-05 season with the Boston Frenzy but was waived in December 2004.
The actor only appeared in one episode of Game of Thrones as Mag the Mighty, the 2014 episode Watchers on the Wall, so it remains unclear if the late actor's passing will be addressed at all in the new season of Game of Thrones. Neil Fingleton will certainly be missed by the Game of Thrones community and the acting community at large. If we hear more updates about his passing, we'll be sure to keep you posted.
