NBC has decided to pass on the Murder, She Wrote reboot that they gave a pilot commitment to back in October.

Octavia Spencer had been attached to star as a hospital administrator and amateur sleuth, who self-publishes her first mystery novel. Alexandra Cunningham wrote the pilot script, with David Janollari set to produce. However, the network isn't completely bailing on the project. They are contemplating approaching the project in a different way, with a whole new concept, perhaps further down the road. The move frees up Octavia Spencer to pursue other projects, as she's expected to be one of the most sought-after actresses this pilot season.

The original Murder, She Wrote starred Angela Lansbury and ran for 12 seasons between 1984 and 1996. This reboot was said to have a lighter tone than the original series.

Alexandra Cunningham was also behind NBC's Prime Suspect reboot.
