Netflix has released a new trailer for Mystery Science Theater 3000 season 12. This is going to be a bit different than the first season of the revived cult series, which debuted last year on the streaming service following an incredibly successful Kickstarter campaign. This time around, Jonah Heston, Crow T. Robot and Tom Servo are going to have to endure a riff marathon of six ultra-bad movies in a row in what has been called The Gauntlet.

While every season of MST3K up to this point has seen the host and his robot friends riffing through one bad movie at a time, creator Joel Hodgson and the new cast decided to try something different this time around. The premise being that Jonah Heston (played by comedian and TV host Jonah Ray) will have to sit through six terrible movies in a row with no break in between. It would be enough to melt anyone's brain, especially when looking at the lineup of movies in store for season 12.

The six movies this season include the infamous 1980s E.T. ripoff Mac and Me, a low-budget take on Pacific Rim from Alysum, the folks behind the Sharknado franchise titled Atlantic Rim and Lords of the Deep, which basically seems like a B-movie version of Alien underwater. Rounding out this season's titles are The Day Time Ended, Killer Fish and Ator: The Fighting Eagle. All of these movies should supply the gang with plenty of riffing material, but starting with Mac and Me is no doubt the highlight of the lineup.

Another key difference here is the length of season 12. Mystery Science Theater 3000 season 11 included 14 episodes. This time around, we're getting just six. However, doing 14 episode seasons is asking a lot and there is no way they could have accomplished a premise that plays on people's binge-watching habits like The Gauntlet does with anything more than six episodes. Creator Joel Hodgson, in an interview with Nerdist, feels this will actually be much more in line with people's modern viewing habits.

"It's a lot clearer, here's the beginning, here's the end. You can see the finish line. I just feel like we really satisfied MST fans, but they're used to lots and lots of MSTs and they want really a lot. When you think of nice normal people who might go, 'What's this weird show I've heard about?' Now, I feel like we made it in a shape that newcomers can get to it and people who like the show, it's the same format but it's more breezy I think."

Patton Oswalt and Felicia Day return this season as Max and Kinga Forrester, alongside Hampton Yount as Crow and Baron Vaughn as Tom Servo. Mystery Science Theater 3000 season 12 arrives on November 22, Thanksgiving Day, in keeping with the longstanding tradition of the MST3K Turkey Day marathon.
