Disney has just unveiled a new look at the upcoming Monsters Inc. sequel series Monsters at Work which is currently in development for the Disney+ streaming service. While an exact release date wasn't revealed, the company says the new series will be available to stream in 2020. Star Ben Feldman personally appeared at the D23 Expo for the Disney+ panel along with co-star Aisha Tyler to reveal the designs for their characters Tylor and Millie. The official Twitter account for Disney+ also posted an image of the first look at the characters, which you can take see below.
As we learned at today's D23 Expo, Monsters at Work is set six months after the events of Monsters Inc. with the city of Monstropolis now fueled with the sound of laughter. It follows a new cast of characters led by Feldman as Facilities Team mechanic Tylor Tuskmon and Tyler as his mother Millie, with Billy Crystal and John Goodman making special appearances as Mike and Sulley. Tylor is particularly a fan of the classic Monsters Inc. characters, dreaming of working alongside them. Also set for the cast are Jennifer Tilly as Celia, John Ratzenberger as Yeti, Kelly Marie Tran as Tylor's friend Val Little, Henry Winkler as the new boss Fritz, Lucas Neff as the plumber Duncan, Alanna Ubach as Cutter, and Stephen Stanton as Needleman.
Directed by Pete Docter and written by Andrew Stanton and Dan Gerson, Monsters Inc. was released all the way back in 2001. It tells the story of two monsters, James "Sulley" Sullivan and his pal Mike Wazowski, who work at the energy-producing factory Monsters, Inc., which generates its power by scaring human children and harvesting their screams. When a little girl winds up entering the facility, Sulley and Mike work together to return her home, learning something new about how children really are in the process. The movie concludes with the monsters changing the factory's power to be produced with children's laughter.
Monsters Inc. was a classic, but it seemed to leave little room creatively for a sequel. In 2013, the follow-up movie Monsters University was released, but it served as a prequel to the original. With Goodman, Crystal, and Steve Buscemi reprising their roles, the plot focuses on the start of their friendship as studies as the titular university. At the start, the two are rivals, but they soon become best friends as seen in the original 2001 movie. Now, after nearly two decades past the release of the first movie, Monsters Inc. is finally getting a true sequel.
Monsters at Work will launch on Disney+ sometime in 2020. It goes without saying that the show will be a must-see series for anyone who has enjoyed the previous Monsters movies. While we wait for the show to release, Disney+ subscribers can watch the original Monsters Inc. in the meantime as the title will be a part of Pixar Animation's library of movies available on the service. The first look at Tylor and Millie from Monsters at Work comes to us from Disney+ on Twitter.
