Mom is ending its run at CBS after eight seasons following the departure of star Anna Faris. Last year, Faris announced that she was leaving the series to pursue other opportunities, but the network chose to move on with the rest of the remaining cast members. Partway through the show's first season sans Faris, the network has announced that Mom will end after its current season, bowing out with the series finale on May 6.

"For the past eight years, we've had the great honor to bring these wonderful characters to life, sharing their struggles and triumphs with millions of viewers every week," executive producers Chuck Lorre, Gemma Baker, and Nick Bakay said in a statement. "From the beginning, we set out to tell stories about recovery from alcoholism and addiction that are rarely portrayed in a network comedy series."

Prior to her departure, Mom followed Faris as one half of a mother-daughter duo with Allison Janney co-starring as her mother. After the two had been estranged for years and struggling with their own addictions, Christy (Faris) moves back in with mother Bonnie (Janney) as they attempt to put their lives back together and patch up their relationship. Mimi Kennedy, Jaime Pressly, and Kristen Johnson also starred as the mother and daughter's support system from Alcoholics Anonymous.

When Faris left the series after seven seasons, it was explained on the show that Christy had moved to Washington to further pursue her law career. Mom co-creator Chuck Lorre also noted at the time that Christy's exit was an "enormous loss," but thought the cast and crew could move on without her. You can't fault Lorre for his optimism. After all, Lorre saw another one of his popular shows, Two and a Half Men, continue for another four seasons after losing one of its lead stars as well.

"The show was very much built around her and Allison," Lorre told USA Today in October. "For her to step out was a big move to cope with. but we have an extraordinary ensemble led by Allison in a show about women in recovery. Let's continue to tell the stories of a wonderful group of people we'd come to know and care about."

While the news of the series getting the boot hadn't yet been made public, Allison Janney also addressed just how much Christy's absence is felt in the eighth season of Mom just days ago. As Janney explained on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Tuesday: "Yeah, it was very odd and she's very missed. Anna is missed and her character on the show is missed."

News of Mom ending is sure to disappoint many fans of the series, but it's certainly been an amazing run. With high ratings and critical acclaim, the series was also a consistent big hitter at awards season, which includes two Emmy wins for Janney two years in a row. The final episode of Mom will air on CBS on May 6. Hopefully, they'll find a way to at least bring back Faris as Christy one more time for the finale. This news comes to us from USA Today.
