Mindhunter season 3 is closer than ever to becoming a reality. Created by Joe Penhall and executive produced by David Fincher, the popular crime drama series debuted with its first season on Netflix in 2017. The series found even greater fame when its second season premiered in 2019, and there are a lot of people hoping to see the show come back to the streamer for more new episodes.

In January 2020, things were looking bad for the show after Netflix released series' leads Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv from their contracts. With uncertainty over the future of the series, Netflix also put Mindhunter on hold indefinitely. For all intents and purposes, it started to look like the show would conclude with a two-season run with no indication that Netflix would ever revive the series.

Things have apparently changed over the past year, as Small Screen reports that Fincher and Netflix are back in talks for a third season of Mindhunter. David Fincher has also signed a four-year development deal with Netflix, and his relationship was further strengthened with the streamer after the success of the Netflix Original Mank. Directed by Fincher, Mank was nominated for ten Academy Awards, including Best Director for Fincher and Best Picture.

Fincher previously spoke about how taxing the series was for him to be a part of in an interview with Vulture in October. Of living in the Pittsburgh-shot series, Fincher said: "We lived there for almost three year. Not year in and year out, but ... probably six or seven months a year ... Mindhunter was a lot for me."

Suggesting that the series was also expensive to film, the filmmaker added: ""Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was a very expensive show. We talked about, 'Finish Mank and then see how you feel,' but I honestly don't think we're going to be able to do it for less than I did season 2. And on some level, you have to be realistic - dollars have to equal eyeballs."

The future of Mindhunter was looking very grim, but there has remained hope with fans that the series would one day return. It's on hold indefinitely at this time, but a spokesperson for Netflix said in October that the streamer said they could revisi the series in the future, "Maybe in five years." At best, that made it seem like if Mindhunter season 3 would ever happen, it wouldn't be anytime soon.

Mindhunter follows the Behavioral Science Unit in the FBI in the late 1970s, chronicling the early days of criminal profiling. Many real-life serial killers have been featured in the series, including acclaimed performances by Cameron Britton as Ed Kemper, Jack Erdie as Richard Speck, Sam Strike as Montie Rissell, Oliver Cooper as David Berkowitz, and Damon Herriman as Charles Manson. The series primarily featured Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv as members of the BSU.

Hopefully, the rumors are true and Netflix will be able to soon finalize a deal for Mindhunter season 3 with Fincher. In the meantime, the first two seasons are streaming on Netflix. This news comes to us from Small Screen.
