Singer Melanie Martinez, who is best known for appearing as a contestant on Season 3 of NBC's reality series The Voice, has been accused of sexual assault by her one-time friend and fellow female singer, Timothy Heller. Timothy Heller took to her Twitter account last night to share a lengthy story about how Melanie Martinez sexually assaulted her during what she called "the most difficult time in her life," when she was sleeping over at Martinez's place. No details were given about when specifically the assault may have happened.
The statement reveals that Timothy Heller was staying over at Melanie Martinez's place and that night Martinez asked to have sex with her, which Heller tried to "laugh off" by stating that she had a boyfriend although Martinez responded that he didn't have to know. Heller stated that she repeatedly said no to her advances and was exhausted because she had to work early in the morning. The next night, Martinez convinced Heller to smoke weed and as she grew more tired, Martinez started asking to touch her arm or her boobs, and since she was "so exhausted and confused and high and belittled I allowed it to happen," which lead to her touching the rest of her. Here's part of her statement about the sexual assault below.
"I never said yes. I said no, repeatedly. But she used her power over me, and broke me down. Just so there is no confusion, I was molested by my best friend. I lay still in shock, completely not reciprocating. I hate speaking so bluntly about it because it makes me extremely uncomfortable, but she performed oral sex on me and then I was penetrated with a sex toy without being asked. That's what happened."
She added that they never spoke about that night again, and their friendship ultimately ended because, "she decided she didn't have time for me anymore." The singer added that she is only telling this story now because, due to the sexual assault cases that are springing up every day, she hopes "people will believe me." She added that she wants people to imagine Melanie Martinez's "role in this being a man," adding that "girls can rape girls" and "Friendship doesn't equal consent." After this statement was released on social media, Melanie Martinez released a statement of her own regarding these sexual misconduct allegations, claiming she had her friend's consent the whole time.
"I am horrified and saddened by the statements and story told tonight by Timothy Heller. What she and I shared was a close friendship for a period of time. We came into each other's lives as we were both starting our careers as artists, and we tried to help each other. We both had pain in dealing with our individual demons and the new paths we were forging, but I truly felt we were trying to lift each other up. She never said no to what we chose to do together. And although we parted ways, I am sending her love and light always."
There is no indication that any formal rape charges will be filed against Melanie Martinez, but she becomes the latest Hollywood celebrity to be accused of sexual misconduct, including Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Dustin Hoffman, Jeffrey Tambor, Brett Ratner, and many, many more. When I wrote this story about my assault, I initially wasn’t going to make the abuser. But I think it’s important for you all to know this is about Melanie Martinez pic.twitter.com/4PQ5oNI2s9— Timothy Heller (@timethyheller) December 4, 2017
