The long talked about motorcycle club drama Mayans MC is starting to heat up. The series, which comes from Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter, has brought in its first cast member. And it's iconic actor Edward James Olmos.

Mayans MC is a direct Sons of Anarchy spin-off that has been planned ever since that drama went off the air in 2014. FX has issued a pilot order for this new show, set in a post-Jax Teller world. The story centers on EZ Reyes, who is a prospect in the Mayan MC charter that sits on the California and Mexico border. Reyes is caught between his desire for vengeance against the cartel and trying to earn respect from the many women he loves.

Edward James Olmos is playing the Reyes family patriarch Felipe. He is described as once being strong. But he has been dealt a life of hard labor, and he has plenty of bullet wound scars to show for his rough existence. He often struggles with keeping his past hidden, which causes him to lead his sons down what TVLine calls a 'lawful, righteous path'.

Edward James Olsmos has lead a long and varied career, but TV fans may know him best as Admiral William Adama on Battlestar Galactica. He has officially signed onto star in Mayans MC. The show is considered 'in-the-works' at this stage, and the title could change. Fans of Sons of Anarchy will recognize that the Mayans were an ongoing presence in the original series. They were considered a force to be reckoned with especially by the men of SAMCRO.

Kurt Sutter co-wrote the pilot with Elgin James. He will also direct the pilot. He is also executive producing with Elgin James serving as Co-Executive producer. The pilot is being produced by Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions, with production scheduled to begin in March.

Kurt Sutter is the creator, writer, producer, director and actor behind the hit FX television show Sons of Anarchy. He is also the creator, writer, and producer of The Bastard Executioner and worked as a writer, producer, director, and actor on The Shield. Sutter made his feature film debut Southpaw starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Rachel McAdams, written by Sutter and directed by Antoine Fuqua; The Weinstein Company released the film in July 2015.

FX hasn't issued a release date for Mayans MC at this time. It's long been suspected that surviving characters from Sons of Anarchy may appear on the show on occasion. It is also suspected that the show may flashback to the 70s while taking place in current day. Earlier rumors claimed that Jax could be shown as a kid, but that has never been confirmed. No further details have been announced by FX, but with this major piece of casting in place, fans should hear more soon.
