The first animated series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be here next year. A summer 2021 release is planned for Marvel's What If...? season 1 which was initially announced last year as part of Marvel Studios' Phase 4 plans. No specific date has been set at this time, but we now know more precisely when we can expect to see the series. Canadian animation house Squeeze has been tapped to produce several episodes of the show's inaugural season.

According to a new report, Squeeze will create five episodes of What If? The show's first season will consist of ten episodes in total, and What If? Season 2 has already been ordered. The Disney+ series, which takes its name from the Marvel Comics title of the same name, will take a look at alternate universe scenarios for various characters in the MCU. For example, we will get a glimpse of Peggy Carter as Captain Britain, taking the place of Steve Rogers in the supersoldier program, meaning he never became Captain America. It's also expected that one of the episodes will be taking on the beloved Marvel Zombies comics.

Jeffrey Wright will play The Watcher, a powerful Celestial being from Marvel lore who will serve as the narrator of the series. Many MCU stars will be reprising their roles for the show. Josh Brolin, Chadwick Boseman, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Michael B. Jordan, Sebastian Stan, Hayley Atwell, Karen Gillen, Mark Ruffalo, Samuel L. Jackson, Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Jeff Goldblum and Jeremy Renner will all be providing their voices, amongst others. Squeeze CEO and co-founder Denis Dore had this to say about it.

"Marvel was looking for a world-class animation studio to come up with a fresh and unique style that would be in keeping with their brand essence. We really clicked, right from our initial talks in Los Angeles last year, and they loved our proposal. I'm thrilled that our artists' creativity and talent resonated so strongly in Hollywood."

This is part of the revamped Marvel Television, which is now being headed up by Marvel Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige, the man responsible for making the MCU what it is today. Aside from What If? several live-action shows that are heavily connected to the movies are also in the works. The Falcon and the Winter Solidier and WandaVision will both debut this year, with Loki and Hawkeye also on deck for 2021. Other shows currently in development include She-Hulk, Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel.

Bryan Andrews serves as the head director of the Disney+ series, with Ashley Bradley on board as the head writer. At this point, the show is only scheduled for one season, but it's easy to see how something like this could have nearly unlimited potential, as the Marvel multiverse is a vast place with endless possibilities to explore. We'll be sure to keep you posted as any further details, such as an exact release date, are made available. This news comes to us via Variety.
