The Robbinson family will return for one final mission on Netflix. Lost in Space has been renewed for season 3 by the streaming service, which will conclude the sci-fi series. The show is set to make its return to Netflix in 2021, as announced by a new, brief teaser. This comes several months after season 2 landed on Netflix in December.

As revealed by the show's official Twitter account, the teaser is brief and doesn't tell us much about season 3. It features the robot as the number 3 is slowly revealed in his facemask. Executive producer and showrunner Zack Estrin will return. What's more, Estrin and Netflix have come to terms on a multi-year deal that will see him creating new shows for the streaming service. Estrin had this to say in a statement.

"From the beginning, we've always viewed this particular story of The Robinsons as a trilogy. A three part epic family adventure with a clear beginning, middle and end. It's also worth noting that, with what these characters go through just trying to survive each episode, if anyone deserves to catch their breath before their next mission, it's Will, Penny, Judy, Maureen, John, Don West, Dr. Smith... and The Robot. And, of course, Debbie the Chicken. So while this chapter of 'Lost In Space' is coming to a rousing conclusion, I'm excited about continuing to explore new stories with my friends at Netflix, and for all of the incredible possibilities that lie ahead."

This reboot of the classic 60s sci-fi series initially launched in April 2018. Netflix, historically speaking, doesn't share much in the way of ratings information. It did well enough to score a renewal though and, critically speaking, the show has done quite well for them. While certain fans may be said to see the show go, they should take comfort in knowing things will reach a proper conclusion. Ted Biaselli, director of original series at Netflix, had this to say.

"We are so thrilled to share more adventures of The Robinson Family and see their journey through to what is sure to be an epic finale. We're especially thankful to Zack Estrin, Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless, Kevin Burns and Jon Jashni for helming 'Lost in Space,' which has brought viewers a premium action-packed and visually spectacular series that the whole family can enjoy together, and we can't wait for our family audiences to see where season 3 will lead!"

Netflix has, in the past, canceled some beloved shows before they reached their natural end. Santa Clarita Diet, American Vandal and One Day at a Time serve as just a few examples. For Netflix, it's all about driving subscribers and they have a complicated system for figuring that all out. It seems that news shows tend to drive more subscribers, so the service sees fewer shows renewed for more than a few seasons than traditional networks.

The cast for the series includes Toby Stephens, Molly Parker, Maxwell Jenkins, Mina Sundwall, Taylor Russell, Ignacio Serricchio and Parker Posey. Zack Estrin, Kevin Burns, Jon Jashni, Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless serve as executive producers. Be sure to check out the teaser video from the Lost In Space Twitter account for yourself.
