One of the most unexpected casting choices in upcoming MCU fare has to be Owen Wilson, who briefly popped up in the trailer for the Loki Disney+ series. The actor will be playing the role of Mobius, a member of the immensely powerful Time Variance Authority (TVA) that captures Loki. In a recent interview, Wilson admitted he was not familiar with Mobius from Marvel Comics, but his co-star Tom Hiddleston who plays Loki was more than happy to fill in the gaps for him.
"No, I didn't [read the comics but] maybe I should have, but actually Tom Hiddleston kind of, who of course plays Loki. He kind of, or we kind of, you know, they were almost like the Loki lectures. And so he, for a couple days walked me through everything and the whole lore... [Tom Hiddleston caught me up on MCU] need to know [events by showing me] clips from the other movies and how it all fed into this story... Tom telling me about it, telling me about his character. And even in the way sometimes that he would describe his character, it was useful for me because my character Mobius in Loki is kind of interviewing him at some point. So it kind of worked doing it that way."
In the comics, Mobius is an overworked officer of the TVA, tasked with maintaining order over the various time streams that are endangered whenever the fabric of time across the multiverse is disrupted. Mobius is actually an immensely powerful individual, capable of stopping time and altering reality. But the character can only act in accordance with the wishes of the TVA.
Much like in the comics, Wilson as Mobius appears to have apprehended Loki due to the God of Mischief's antics creating disruptions in time and space. From what we know from the trailer for Loki, the titular character is in the custody of the TVA, but will soon break out of jail and go on a time-traveling crime spree.
Interestingly, Loki's character arc from villain to anti-hero through the MCU had evolved so much that by the time that Avengers: Infinity War came around, the character had become a full-fledged hero who stood with his brother Thor against Thanos' army and paid the cost of making his stand with his life.
But the Loki who will appear in his show will be the guy who was the main villain of the first Avengers movie and is still very much a bad guy. It remains to be seen if this Loki will have to learn lessons in compassion and humility all over again, or the show will treat him like a hero from the start.
Loki features a lead cast consisting of Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, Sophia Di Martino, Sasha Lane, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Richard E. Grant. After a long delay, the series is set to arrive on Disney+ in May 2021.
