L.A.'s Finest, the TV spin-off of popular movie franchise Bad Boys, has become the center of an unfortunate incident that resulted in showrunner Brandon Sonnier losing his leg. This was caused by a terrifying chain reaction car stunt gone wrong on set.
The accident happened Thursday before last, during shooting on an episode of the new series. /bad-boys-tv-series-spin-off-gabrielle-union/ Brandon Sonnier serves as both the showrunner and executive producer. He was on set in San Pedro, California along with executive producer and co-showrunner Brandon Margolis.
Jessica Alba stars in the action-packed spin-off alongside Gabrielle Union, who is reprising her role from Bad Boys II. Sonnier and Margolis were situated inside the video village, where they could watch the stunt taking place on monitors. During the scene in question, the stunt car hit a cargo crate, which caused it to slam into the tent where the showrunners were situated.
Sonnier's leg became pinned under the car during the crash. Both Sonnier and Margolis were rushed to a nearby hospital to be treated for injuries. Margolis was released shortly after arriving, but Sonnier's leg was so badly injured that the doctors decided that they needed to amputated it just below the knee.
It is reported that Sonnier is still in the hospital. California's Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) have opened an ongoing investigation into what caused the accident to happen. No one else was injured in the stunt. Production did shut down last Friday. Sony Pictures Television Jeff Frost and co-Presidents Chris Parnell and Jason Clodfelter had this to say in a statement following the incident.
"Our hearts go out to our SPT family members who were injured and we pray for a full recovery."
Head of Spectrum Originals, Katherine Pope said this about the accident.
"We are saddened by this incident and send our most heartfelt wishes to our two beloved crew members, hoping their recovery is both swift and complete."
L.A.'s Finest follows Union's Sydney Burnett character from the second Bad Boys movie. She leaves her complicated past behind to become an LAPD detective, working alongside new partner Nancy McKenna, played by Jessica Alba. Reps for SPT and Spectrum Communications have not yet responded. This news comes from Deadline.
