Peacock is getting in on the true crime craze by ordering a documentary series detailing the crimes of sadistic serial killer John Wayne Gacy. Called John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise, the six-episode series is set to arrive on the NBCUniversal streamer on Thursday, March 25. Word of the upcoming docuseries was announced at Peacock's presentation at the TCA virtual press tour on Wednesday. A trailer has also been released, which you can check out below.

NBC News Studios is developing the series with Emmy-nominated producer Rod Blackhurst (Amanda Knox) and his Witchcraft Motion Picture Company. According to Peacock, Devil in Disguise "tells the story of Gacy through his own words, those who were forever changed by his unspeakable deeds and those who believe that the full truth about the case remains concealed to this day. The series follows the investigation of Gacy and poses new questions about what may have happened and who else may be involved."

Gacy himself will be heavily featured in the docuseries as it includes a multi-hour interview with the infamous serial killer. Most of the footage has reportedly never been seen, giving viewers a chance to see another side of Gacy never previously explored on film. Peacock says Devil in Disguise will also feature exclusive audio and video interviews, which includes his second ex-wife and one of his closest friends.

Because he occasionally suited up as a party clown to entertain children, Gacy is has consistently been referred to as a real-life "killer clown." No less than 26 bodies were unearthed from the crawlspace beneath Gacy's home when he was finally arrested by police, and even more were found elsewhere after the killer had dumped the corpses. This makes him one of the country's most prolific serial killers in addition to one of the most horrifying. He was executed by lethal injection for his crimes in 1994.

True crime documentaries, ones about serial killers in particular, have become very popular with binge-watchers in recent years. Netflix has previously struck a chord with the docuseries Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes and recently debuted the highly-viewed four-part series Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer about Richard Ramirez. It has also been reported that the streamer is developing a limited series based on Jeffrey Dahmer. Getting an exclusive new look into the crimes of Gacy is Peacock's way of getting in on the craze.

More documentary series are coming to Peacock that venture outside of the true crime bubble as well. The streamer has also announced Michael Phelps: Medals, Memories & More, a three-part docuseries from NBC Sports set to premiere on Peacock ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. Telling the story of his widely celebrated Olympic career, the series details how Phelps mecame the most decorated Olympian of all time with 28 medals to his name.

Rod Blackhurst, Alexa Danner, Elizabeth Fischer, and Tracy Ullman are executive producing John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise. Alison True will serve as executive consultant. The series will debut on Peacock on Thursday, March 25. This news comes to us from Deadline.
