Netflix is going to kick off 2021 by giving the world exactly what it needs; a whole lot of swearing. The streaming service has released a brand new trailer for the upcoming docuseries History of Swear Words. Just as the title suggests, the show will be taking viewers on a journey, exploring the history behind some common profane language. And none other than Nicolas Cage (Leaving Las Vegas, Face/Off) will be our guide through this journey. Based on what we're seeing in this new trailer, they couldn't have picked a better man for the job. Warning: this trailer is most definitely NSFW.
The trailer wastes precisely no time in getting to the point. Nicolas Cage, looking rather classy in a suit, seated in an equally classy room, screams "f***" at the top of his lungs in glorious fashion. He then proceeds to set up the premise of the show, explaining that each episode will look at the history and cultural impact of that episode's particular swear word. Quite a few celebrity guests make appearances in the trailer, such as Sarah Silverman, Nikki Glaser and others to discuss these words. We also get background information from experts. The trailer alone packs in quite a bit of information and amusement. One can only imagine what a full episode will be like.
While it isn't totally clear when the episodes were shot, it does appear that this was a clever way to produce entertaining content in the challenging year that has been 2020. There are no large groups assembled here. It is largely one person at a time, likely with a minimal crew. Yes, it is a show about swearing, but it is also an example of the creativity studios have had to put forth this year in order to keep the content engine running.
History of Swear Words promises to deliver an education in expletives. Per Netflix, it's the " history lesson you didn't know you needed." The series is described as "a loud and proudly profane series that explores the origins, pop culture-usage, science and cultural impact of curse words." The show will feature interviews with experts in etymology and pop culture, as well as historians and entertainers. The six-episode series will take a look at the origins of six different popular swear words.
As for Nicolas Cage, this is yet another feather he can put in his cap. He will be quite busy in 2021, with several movies coming out as well. Cage will be seen in Wally's Wonderland, where he will take on animatronic nightmares, not unlike Five Nights at Freddy's, as well as The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, which is a meta movie that will see Cage playing a version of himself. The Oscar-winner is also set to play Joe Exotic in a series tackling the figure from Tiger King. History of Swear Words arrives January 5, 2021, on the Netflix streaming service. Be sure to check out the trailer for yourself.
