Disney has revealed a new poster for the upcoming High School Musical show, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. This is one of the legacy properties that the studio is tapping into for the upcoming Disney+ streaming service. As the D23 Expo is getting underway, they've decided to share this new one-sheet, which offers a look at the new cast we'll be following in an updated version of the franchise, which promises to be something new entirely.
The poster was shared online ahead of the Disney+ panel at D23. It's expected we'll learn a lot more about this show, as well as other launch projects, at that time. Whether or not we get a trailer for this show remains to be seen, but the caption provided on social media confirms this will indeed be a launch title arriving with the service this November. The caption reads as follows.
"Not a reboot. Not a sequel. The start of something new. High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Streaming November 12 only on #DisneyPlus."
The poster showcases several of the main cast members and comes with the tagline, "They're almost all in this together." The cast includes Josh Bassett (Ricky), Olivia Rodrigo (Nini), Kate Reinders (Miss Jenn), Sofia Wylie (Gina), Matt Cornett (E.J.), Dara Renee (Kourtney), Larry Saperstein (Big Red), Mark St. Cyr (Mr. Mazzara), Frankie Rodriguez (Carlos) and Julia Lester (Ashlyn). Production got underway on the show back in February and this was one of the first original projects that was revealed for Disney's upcoming streaming service, which they intend to use to take on Netflix in the direct-to-consumer market.
High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is set at East High, the location that the original movie was filmed. It centers on a group of students on the way to the opening night of their school's first-ever production of "High School Musical." The series will contain meta references and documentary elements, like The Office. It's described as a modern take on the "classic" from 15 years ago. So-called "show-mances" blossom, friendships are tested, new friendships are made, rivalries flare and songs are sung. Their lives are changed forever as these young people discover the transformative power that only high school theater can provide.
High School Musical launched in 2006 and helped make stars of Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens. It proved to be a massive success for Disney. The movie spawned two sequels, 2007's High School Musical 2 and 2008's High School Musical 3: Senior Year. There were also spin-offs such as Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure. The first season of the show will consist of 10 episodes. We'll be sure to keep you posted with any updates on this or other projects from D23 throughout the weekend.
