DC Comics found an unexpected hit on its hands when the animated Harley Quinn series became a breakout favorite among audiences. The show is currently gearing up for the release of its third season. The series co-showrunner Patrick Schumacker recently took to Twitter to share his excitement over Harley's new look from the upcoming season.

"I just saw a @shaneglines design for season 3 of @dcharleyquinn with Harley in a red carpet gown and it would break the Internet if I shared it. But I can't. Which is killing me. And now you all must feel my pain! #Harlivy #HarleyQuinnSeason3."

Interestingly, Harley Quinn wearing a full red gown was a major part of the footage from the upcoming reboot of James Gunn's The Suicide Squad from the teasers that have been released so far. In the footage, Margot Robbie can be seen as Harley in the red gown wielding a set of guns.

It is possible that the third season of Harley Quinn will be taking some cues from Margot Robbie's new look as Harley Quinn, even if the way in which Robbie plays the character is quite different from the manner in which Kaley Cuoco voices the character on the show. In the past, this difference had led to rumors of an ongoing feud between Robbie and Cuoco, to the point that Cuoco had to personally quash the rumors last year.

"When Harley became kind of a big deal and then when Birds of Prey came out, there were all these stories that me and Margot Robbie were feuding. But I've never even met her. I love her. There was an article that came out that said we would not show up together at Comic-Con. We refused to be on the same stage together. Neither of us was even at Comic-Con, okay?"

Apart from Harley's new look, Season 3 of Harley Quinn is set to make some major updates to the series. Harley is now officially a couple with long-term gal pal Poison Ivy. Doctor Psycho has turned against his former villainous allies and is plotting against them, Kite Man is nursing a broken heart after being left at the altar by Ivy, and Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman have to deal with the fallout after their chemically-induced threesome last season. Last year, Schumacker had expressed his excitement over finally getting started charting the various storylines for the new season.

"Season 2 ended a while ago. We knew the show show was doing pretty well on DC Universe. We knew the show was gonna end up on HBO Max eventually, and we knew that that there were talks happening about a season three, but all of that was happening like almost right when quarantine started. So we had a really long time to think about what we might do, or at least the gist of the story that we might want to tell for season 3. We're just super excited to finally actually be able to put that into action and actually get the ideas ping-ponging off both the returning writers and the inevitable new writers that we're getting to hire now. I am very excited to finally get those ideas out and about in the ether."

Harley Quinn stars Kaley Cuoco, Lake Bell, Diedrich Bader, Alan Tudyk, Rahul Kohli, Christopher Meloni, Tony Hale, Ron Funches, Wanda Sykes, Natalie Morales, Jim Rash, Giancarlo Esposito, Jason Alexander, and J.B. Smoove. Seasons 1 and 2 of the series are available to stream on HBO Max.
