Some things weren't meant to be turned into a sexy Halloween costume, especially when it has to do with The Handmaid's Tale. Popular online lingerie and costume shop Yandy has many costumes of the sexy variety on their site, including a sexy Pennywise from IT, Hannibal Lecter, Black Panther, and a bunch more. But The Handmaid's Tale costume sparked outrage right from the start, which resulted in the company swiftly removing the sexy item and issuing a lengthy apology for causing such a stir.

The online retailer recently introduced a sexy Handmaid's Tale-inspired costume called the "Brave Red Maiden." The Halloween costume includes the show's white bonnet and also comes with a red cloak and a minidress underneath. The description for the costume urged women to speak their minds and go against the dystopian future from the hit Emmy Award winning Hulu series. The "Brave Red Maiden" was sold for $64.95 and quickly started a heavy backlash on social media, with many women wondering why the company would make such a costume.

Yandy also came under fire last year for making a pregnant Kylie Jenner costume and has caused controversy for other sexy costumes over the years. While the sexy costume is satire of fictional characters, many women were not pleased with the company poking fun at oppression. The Handmaid's Tale has inspired women to wear replicas of the costume to gatherings and has become a symbol of protest. Yandy had this to say in response.

"Yandy always has stood, and will continue to stand, at the forefront of encouraging our customers to Own Your Sexy. We support our customers being comfortable in their skin, regardless of who they are or what they choose to wear. Our corporate ideology is rooted in female empowerment, and gender empowerment overall. Over the last few hours, it has become obvious that our Yandy Brave Red Maiden Costume is being seen as a symbol of women's oppression, rather than an expression of women's empowerment. This is unfortunate, as it was not our intention on any level. Our initial inspiration to create the piece was through witnessing its use in recent months as a powerful protest image. Given the sincere, heartfelt response, supported by numerous personal stories we've received, we are removing the costume from our site."

While the The Handmaid's Tale sexy costume was removed due to the outrage, there's plenty of other costumes on the site that are still up and are arguably more offensive. A few of the costumes promote racist stereotypes like its "War Chief Hottie" costume and the "Goddess Isis." One of the new costumes for 2018 is the "Beautiful Native," which is just one of the many sexy costumes that could be considered racist, yet there hasn't been a big uprising to take any of those costumes down as of this writing. You can even still buy the sexy Donald Trump costume from two years ago.

The Handmaid's Tale's state-sanctioned abuse of women wasn't the best idea for a satirical costume in 2018, but Yandy probably knew that it would cause a big uproar and result in some awesome free publicity. The costume is definitely offensive, but more people should really be angry over that $64.95 price tag, which is just as offensive as the costume itself. You can check out the now deleted costume below, from the Yandy site thanks to social media users.
