A former American Idol contestant has sadly passed away. Haley Smith was 26 at the time of her death. She was involved in a one-vehicle crash this past August.

Haley Smith participated in Season 11 of American Idol during its initial run on Fox. She reportedly lost control of her motorcycle while driving in Millinocket, Maine, on Aug. 31. The incident happened in the early morning hours, around 2 am. Maine's Office of Chief Medical Examiner and the local police confirmed the young singer's passing. She was confirmed dead at the scene.

According to the singer's father, Smith was riding her motorcycle on a country road. It is believed that a deer may have been involved with the accident. The family has noted that Smith was a 'good rider', and they are doubtful that the young woman simply lost control of the bike.

A full investigation into the death is pending. It is believed that Haley Smith failed to properly 'negotiate a sharp turn and crashed', according to police on the scene of the accident. Smith hails from Utah. She actually auditioned for American Idol during the Colorado tryouts back in 2012.

Haley Smith didn't make it very far in the show's run. The young contestant was eliminated during the second round of Hollywood auditions. The girl was known for bringing a folk twist to her musical stylings. And she wowed hosts at the time Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson with a unique take on Rufus and Chaka Khan's 'Tell Me Something Good'. Tyler at the time called it an 'honor' to hear Haley Smith sing, and noted that she was 'out of his era' with her 'look, sound and vibe'.

Smith was only 18 when she appeared on American Idol. During the audition process, she spoke about her love for nature, "It's where I feel more at peace, you could say." At the time, she had already had a number of jobs including house cleaner, restaurant buser and "a vegetarian working in the meat department."

A representative for American Idol did offer the following statement in regards to Haley Smith's untimely death at the age of 26.

"We are sorry to hear of the passing of Haley Smith and our thoughts and prayers are with her family."

Haley Smith would have celebrated her 27th birthday this November, which the family was preparing for. May she rest in peace. Our condolences go out to the surviving members of her close knit family. This was reported at TMZ.
