Last year, Arrow came to an end after an eight season run. One of the most notable moments in the finale was the tease of David Ramsay's character John Diggle discovering a Green Lantern ring on his way to Metropolis. This heavily implied that his character would return in full Green Lantern garb in future Arrowverse shows, but Ramsay recently discussed that that might not be the case. In an interview with TV Line, Ramsay revealed that Diggle initially refused the ring, and that there will be some major consequences for that decision.

"This is a very, very, very preliminary [look at] what happens from this refusal, and what it means to his destiny. We simply get into the preliminary physical effects of his refusal of whatever it was in that box. We've gone to great lengths over the years to make Diggle one of the more grounded characters. Any time he would go fast with Flash, he would throw up, and he was always amazed when he saw someone flying. All these things were kind of otherworldly to him, because he was a very earthbound hero."

"And after Crisis, he got back his wife, who was abducted by the Monitor, and he got back his daughter Sara, who was taken out of existence by Flashpoint. So part of Diggle's story is that the last thing he would want to do right now is receive an invitation from something otherworldly, because he finally has his family back, and he lost his best friend to some otherworldliness. So he refused the invitation of whatever was in the box, but there are consequences to that, and that story, what he will do next, is part of what we tell throughout these four episodes."

Diggle is set to have appearances in one episode each of Batwoman, The Flash, Superman and Lois, and Supergirl. His first stop will be Batwoman, which Ramsay explains the reason by saying, "Headaches. Debilitating headaches. And he's hearing voices. He goes to Gotham to get help with this, to see a physician there, and in the meantime, his A.R.G.U.S. story continues."

It will be interesting to see John Diggle explore this new development in the Arrowverse. For years during its run, fans of Arrow had been campaigning for Diggle to become the Arrowverse's Green Lantern. In Season 7, it seemed as if the stars were aligning when it was revealed that Diggle's adopted name was John Stewart (the name of one of the Green Lanterns in the comics). The finale went even further by showing Diggle discovering the ring, and that seemed to solidify his turn as TV's Green Lantern. However, Ramsay is now saying that Diggle refused the ring, which at first glance is a bummer for fans. These next four episodes will explore that decision, perhaps culminating in Diggle officially taking up the mantle.

Ramsay's return to the Arrowverse will not only be as Diggle. Ramsay is set to direct an episode of both Supergirl and Superman and Lois each in the coming weeks. He also directed a pair of episodes of Arrow during its run, so he's no amateur. It seems as if fans of John Diggle and Green Lantern will have to be patient and/or adjust their expectations as they await Diggle's final decision on the Green Lantern ring.
