You just might see the ladies of The Golden Girls walking the streets during Halloween this year, as the officially licensed costumes offered online are rapidly selling out. Featuring individual packages for Dorothy, Blanche, Rose, and Sophia, each costume had been listed for about $70 by various retailers like Target and Wal-Mart. Word of mouth spread about the availability of the costumes, and weeks ahead of the holiday, most of the costumes across their many sizes have completely sold out their stock. Even Toynk, the company behind the costumes, no longer has listings for them on their official website. Finding them in your local brick-and-mortar Target is also possible, but given their popularity, your chances may not be very high.

One of the most popular sitcoms of all time, four mature women sharing a Miami home, the series starred Bea Arthur as Dorothy Zbornak, Betty White as Rose Nylund, Rue McClanahan as Blanche Devereaux, and Estelle Getty as Sophia Petrillo. Each of the women brought something different to the classic comedy series, giving it a certain charm which has not been successfully replicated in any other sitcom to this day. It enjoyed immense popularity and critical acclaim during its TV run, managing to win three Golden Globes and two Primetime Emmy Awards.

While The Golden Girls aired its final episode in the early '90s, it has not experienced a decline in popularity. In fact, the show remains just as popular as ever. Last year, there was an official Golden Girls cruise offered for big fans of the show, offering themed games and other special events. The toy company NECA also released a line of action figures based on all four of the show's leading ladies, and they quickly became hot sellers as well. Huge fans of The Golden Girls can also check out a touring live puppet show based on the comedy series, featuring puppet reenactments of some of the show's most memorable scenes. It's no wonder costumes based on the series would be highly desired as well.

A lot of people are clearly enjoying these Golden Girls costumes, but not every outfit based on a classic television personality has been a hit this year. Recently, images of a "Sexy Mister Rogers" costume went viral, depicting a young woman modeling the costume which came complete with hand puppets. Many fans of Mister Rogers found the costume to be tasteless, as sexualizing something as wholesome as Mister Rogers' Neighborhood seems like a baffling way to spend Halloween. Fans will soon be able to check out a more flattering portrayal of the TV star when A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood with Tom Hanks premieres in theaters on Nov. 22.

As long as you can track down the appropriate wigs, it shouldn't be terribly difficult to make your own Golden Girls costumes either. A trip to your local thrift store could turn up some matching clothing. In any case, the ladies from the classic sitcom certainly make for an interesting costume choice for Halloween, especially if you can round up three friends to join you. Only the small size is available as of this writing, but you can see more images of one of the costumes at Walmart.com.
