This week's episode of The Goldbergs will pay tribute to Mel Brooks' iconic 1987 Star Wars parody Spaceballs, and features the return of Rick Moranis to his role as Dark Helmet.
The Goldbergs is a sitcom set in the 1980s that regularly pays tribute to popular movies and events from that decade. This week's episode will put the focus on Spaceballs, one of the most successful parody movies in history that fans have been dying to see more of since its release over 30 years ago, but to no avail. Rick Moranis, who played the hilarious parody of Darth Vader in the movie, will be returning to voice his beloved character in this episode. While we will unfortunately not receive the opportunity to see him don the costume yet again, hearing his voice from behind the Dark Helmet mask is sure to still be exciting.
Moranis's Dark Helmet will appear in a dream sequence in the Goldbergs. Adam Goldberg, played by Sean Giambrone, will supposedly battle Dark Helmet with the Schwartz (the Spaceballs version of the Force) in his dream. Adam then promises Dark Helmet that he will get a sequel to Spaceballs made, which we can assume will set up the plot for the rest of the episode.
The reason why this is such a big deal to see Rick Moranis return to this role, even if it is brief, is because Rick Moranis hasn't been acting much in the past 20 years. In 1997, Moranis's wife Ann passed away of breast cancer. After that point, the Spaceballs and Honey, I Shrunk The Kids star dropped his acting career in order to raise his two children. Though he did take a few, small voice roles after the death of his wife, such as Rutt the moose in Disney's Brother Bear, his focus never strayed away from his kids.
Twenty years later, Moranis has still yet to make a physical return to the screen. Even with this guest role in The Goldbergs, Moranis is not actually appearing, as he is only lending his voice. Presumably, someone else was in the Dark Helmet costume during this time, and Moranis's voice was merely dubbed over it.
Despite this, both Rick Moranis and director Mel Brooks, who played President Scrooge and the wise mentor Yogurt in the space parody, have expressed interest in returning for Spaceballs 2 should the opportunity arise. Unfortunately, no plans have arisen, and the likelihood of a sequel to Spaceballs grows less and less likely every year. Rick Moranis's reprisal of his role of Dark Helmet in The Goldbergs is likely to be the last time we ever see him as this character.
Because of this, this week's episode of The Goldberg is likely one Spaceballs fans will not want to miss. This report from USA Today of Rick Moranis's return is great news for fans both of Spaceballs and The Goldbergs, and is sure to bring a lot of attention to the sitcom. You can witness Rick Moranis's return to the role of Dark Helmet in The Goldbergs this Wednesday, May 9th on ABC.
