At long last, HBO has released a full-length trailer for Game of Thrones season 8. Previously, the network had released a teaser trailer that didn't give much in the way of action. Rather, it was more of a tense character piece. We've also seen bits and pieces of footage in various promos, but this is far and away the best look we've got at the series' upcoming conclusion. And it certainly looks like it's going to be an epic conclusion at that.

The trailer opens with a tense bit of Arya Stark in a big hurry before uttering a very cryptic line. Various characters deliver similarly foreboding and grandiose dialogue that sets the stakes for this final run of episodes. The footage itself is unbelievably massive in scope. Lots of dragons. Lots of truly stunning landscapes and lots of set up for truly intense amounts of bloodshed. It's hard to believe this is for a TV show and not for a movie trilogy on par with Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings. But that's the age we live in now and HBO isn't pulling any punches with this one.

Creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, along with the rest of the cast and crew, filmed for over a year, which is why Game of Thrones skipped 2018. Even though there are only going to be six episodes in this final season, it's been promised that they're all going to feel like movies and this first trailer certainly speaks to that. Director David Nutter, who is a series regular and helmed three episodes in this final season, also spoke to that in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly.

"The fans will not be let down. There are a lot of firsts in these episodes. There's the funniest sequence I've ever shot on this show, the most emotional and compelling scene I've ever shot, and there's one scene where there's so many [major characters] together it feels like you're watching a superhero movie."

HBO can't afford to let the fans down, so that's good to hear. This has become one of the most popular shows of all time. To not stick the landing would be chaos. Speaking of chaos, we're finally going to see the battle of Winterfell, which is being positioned as the largest battle ever put to film, be it on a movie or TV screen. Yes, even bigger and longer than the battle of Helm's Deep from The Two Towers.

The network is already developing a prequel series set thousands of years before the events that have already unfolded, which will star Naomi Watts in the lead role. So, hopefully, we won't be without the world of Westeros for too long. Game of Thrones season 8 is set to debut on April 14.
