And just like that, the infamous coffee cup has disappeared from Game of Thrones. As fans of the series, or anyone who has an active social media account for that matter, is surely aware, a disposable coffee cup was left in a shot during the most recent episode of the hit HBO fantasy series. The mistake was spotted rather quickly by fans and began making the rounds on social media, to the network's chagrin. Now, HBO has quietly removed the coffee cup from the scene.

As of this writing, the version of the episode, titled The Last of the Starks, which is available to stream on HBO Go and HBO Now does not feature the coffee cup in question. That particular scene, before the network decided to digitally remove the flagrant error, featured a coffee cup on a table in front of Emilia Clarke's Daenerys Targaryen. The scene took place just ahead of the 17:40 mark in episode 4 of Game of Thrones season 8. So those who have the episode as it aired on their DVR may want to scope it out and maybe even save it, for the sake of preserving history.

Originally, many took to assuming this was a Starbucks cup. Not that that would make it any better or worse, but that was the presumption. However, it was later confirmed by HBO that the cup left in the shot was actually from a local shop in Banbridge in Northern Ireland, which is near where the production was taking place at that time. The network released an official statement on the matter after it started making rounds on social media, doing their best to make light of the situation.

"The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea."

This is far from the first time such a mistake has been made in a major movie or TV show. But Game of Thrones' final season represents a huge moment in the pop culture landscape. Plus, with the advent of social media, these things can be subject to intense scrutiny in real time, which wasn't so much a thing in years past. Art director Hauke Richter, in a statement, made it clear he felt the whole thing was being blown up into a much bigger deal than it actually was.

"Things can get forgotten on set. [It's] so blown out of proportion [because] it has not happened with 'Thrones' so far."

Many on social media have roasted HBO for missing this detail in the editing room. One particular fan decided to make light of the mistake by inserting a Starbucks cup (even though the one in GoT wasn't from Starbucks) into the famed scene from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, in which, Indy and the movie's villain have to correctly choose the Holy Grail. It's a fitting tribute to this mistake that will undoubtedly go down in TV history. Game of Thrones season 8 returns for hits second to last episode this Sunday.
