A Starbucks brand coffee cup made its way onto the screen in the newest episode of Game of Thrones, and fans are having a field day with it on social media. Before we proceed, let it be known we will be mentioning SPOILERS from last night's episode. In the episode, characters were reeling from the deadly battle with the White Walkers, finally culminating in the destruction of the Night King and his army. Some characters pursued their hearts to explore love, each of them seeing some different results. By the end of the show, Daenerys Targaryan and friends had descended into an ambush at King's Landing, resulting in the death of a dragon and the execution of Missandei. Still, what many fans will be focusing on during the water cooler talk this morning is the Starbucks cup that can be seen clear as day in multiple shots.
The moment comes when the survivors of last week's battle are celebrating the occasion by getting hammered. Most everyone in the room is having a great time, and even Jon Snow seems to be enjoying the immense praise he's receiving from others. Noticeably, however, Daenerys begins to feel that her power and relationship with Jon are threatened, looking over the festivities with a somber look on her face. At this time, fans can spot a Starbucks brand coffee cup when looking at the table in front of her. It's clear as day, and if you missed it the first time around, it will be impossible to unsee it once you know it's there. Either someone on the show managed to conjure up a beverage from our universe, or this is simply an unfortunate mistake.
There is clearly a tremendous amount of effort involved in producing Game of Thrones, and we are certainly not looking to undermine their work. Still, it is amusing how the coffee managed to make it so far into production without being noticed. The budget for the series is very high, and the option to remove the cup digitally with the use of CGI was always there. When looking at the dragons and other fantastic visuals we've seen on the series over the years, it seems that wouldn't be difficult to manage. Perhaps that means it slipped by the editors and HBO until it was just too late in the game to fix it.
It might seem unlikely for any other battle on the series to top the one against the White Walkers at Winterfell, but the next episode looks pretty intense. The trailer only manages to show us snippets of what to expect, reserving the heavier moments from the show for when the episode actually airs. What we do know is that things look very bad for both sides of the battle heading into the episode, with Daenerys looking to start the attack on King's Landing - even if it kills the countless innocent civilians inside. Given how close we are to the end, chances are we're going to see at least one major character death, as there's no way this is going to end pretty.
There are now only two episodes left of Game of Thrones on HBO. With or without coffee cups seen on the screen, the show is one of the most popular television programs of all time, and fans aren't going to know what to do with themselves when the series is over. If it makes you feel any better, just imagine Jon Snow's voice telling you, "Prequel is coming." You can take a look at the Starbucks cup making its way into the show and some of the reactions in the tweeted photos below.
