Just days after the series was first announced last week, the El Rey Network has cast Gabriel Luna in their upcoming series Matador.

The show centers on Antonio "Matador" Bravo (Gabriel Luna), a soccer star known both for his athletic prowess and his playboy antics off the field. What his fans, friends and family don't know is that he also moonlights as a highly-trained covert operative, who goes on dangerous missions for a little-known branch of the CIA. The character has been described as a Latino version of James Bond. He goes on a quest to confront the question of his true identity, to determine which of these lives he leads is more important. Nicky Whelan has also been cast as the female lead, although no details were given regarding her character.

Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman wrote the pilot script with showrunners Jay Beattie and Dan Dworkin, who will all serve as executive producers alongside Heather Kadin. Robert Rodriguez, who is directing the pilot episode, is also executive producing alongside his El Rey Network co-founders John Fogelman and Cristina Patwa. The series is slated to debut this July, after the 2014 World Cup.
