With Fox's The Following getting ready to close out its third season, Fox announced today that the series has been canceled. There are just four episodes left in The Following Season 3, with two airing on May 11 and the two-hour season/series finale debuting on May 18. It isn't known if series creator Kevin Williamson and the rest of the producers will try to shop The Following around to different networks.

The Following debuted quite strong in 2013, with just over 10 million viewers tuning in for the series premiere, and the show averaging a healthy 8 million viewers and a 2.6 million rating in the 18-49 demographic throughout the first season. The Following Season 2 suffered a sharp decline, averaging 5.2 million viewers and a 1.8 demo rating, although it still received an early renewal. The Season 3 premiere drew in 4.8 million, but the most recent episode attracted just over 3 million viewers with a 1.1 rating, making it the lowest-rated non-CW program that Monday.

The series stars Kevin Bacon as former FBI agent Ryan Hardy, who is called out of retirement when the notorious serial killer he was tracking, Joe Carroll (James Purefoy), escaped from death row and goes on a killing rampage. The series also stars Shawn Ashmore, Jessica Stroup, Valorie Curry and Sam Underwood. In response to today's news, Kevin Bacon sent out a series of tweets thanking the fans and everyone who worked on the show with him, which you can check out below.
