HBO has decided to pull the plug on the dramatic comedy series Enlightened, just two weeks after Season 2 wrapped up its eight-episode run. Here's the official statement released by the network regarding the cancellation.

"It was a very difficult decision. We're proud of the show and we look forward to working with Mike White and Laura Dern in the future."

Series stars Laura Dern and Mike White co-created the show that followed Amy Jellicoe (Laura Dern), who decides to live a more enlightened life following an office meltdown. Diane Ladd, Timm Sharp, Sarah Burns, Luke Wilson, Jason Mantzoukas, and Mike White also starred.

Mike White revealed last month that he was prepared for the Season 2 finale to be the last episode, and that he was determined Amy should triumph in her confrontation with Abaddon CEO Charles Szidon (James Rebhorn).

"It was important to me that when she finally has this ultimate confrontation with power, that she manages to be eloquent. Otherwise, the whole thing feels like it's a fool's errand. It's important that in the end, Amy's not a fool. She certainly lets her emotional reaction to things override her intellectual side, or the ability to have a more nuanced reading of situations, but in the end there's something pure and important in her mission."
