We have a new trailer for Doctor Who season 12, which finally reveals when the show will make its long-awaited return. Whovians will have something to look forward to early in the new year, as it's been revealed that the sci-fi series will bring Jodie Whittaker's Doctor back for more time traveling shenanigans on New Year's Day. Plus, the latest trailer gives us a great look at the action ahead.

The Doctor Who Season 12 trailer opens up with the Thirteenth Doctor walking through a fiery landscape, with warning of an impending crisis on the way. Things then get more lighthearted as we preview this season's adventures. There is a ton of action, alien creatures aplenty and many mysteries to be unraveled. Chief amongst them being that the Doctor has someone coming for her. Who, or what, precisely remains to be seen, but she'll have her faithful companions by her side through it all.

It was previously revealed by showrunner Chris Chibnall that Jodie Whittaker will be squaring off against the Cybermen this time around, which is a threat she didn't face in her first season as the sci-fi icon. Whittaker took over for Peter Capaldi, who exited the role after season 10, making her the first female Doctor in the history of the series. That was a decision that was met with some backlash from certain fans, but ultimately it seems her take on the character has been embraced.

Another item of note for hardcore fans; along with the recent news that Doctor Who is heading to HBO Max, BBC America has also partnered up with Fathom Events to bring the first two Doctor Who season 12 episodes to the big screen on January 5. The event, which will be simulcast on over 600 screens in the U.S., will feature the season premiere and an early look at episode 2. There will also be a post-screening Q&A with cast members Jodie Whittaker, Tosin Cole and Mandip Gill. BBC America executive director Courtney Thomasma had this to say about it.

"What better way to ring in a new decade than with our favorite Time Lord? BBC America is excited to kick off the New Year with New Who, including a thrilling New Year's Day premiere followed by new episodes every Sunday this winter. Last year, thousands of Whovians packed Madison Square Garden to celebrate Jodie Whittaker's landmark debut as the first female Doctor. This year, we're thrilled to partner with Fathom Events to bring that unique experience to fans all across the country, as Doctor Who embodies the idea of space for all. Let the New Year's countdown begin!"

In the lead up to the season 12 premiere, the BBC will have a full week of Doctor Who seasons from the past. Guest stars for the upcoming season include Goran Visnjic, Stephen Fry, Lenny Henry and Robert Glenister, amongst others. Doctor Who returns on Wednesday, January 1 on the BBC, with the following episodes set to air on Sundays starting January 5. Be sure to check out the new trailer for yourself.
