The Tenth Doctor just might be the most popular of them all, as a Doctor Who poll conducted with 50,000 fans has named David Tennant as their No. 1 favorite. The poll, hosted by Radio Times, featured all thirteen actors in the show's 57-year history. It came down to a very close race between Tennant and Jodie Whittaker, who plays the thirteenth and current incarnation of the Doctor. Both took in around 21 percent of the overall vote with around 10,000 votes each, but Tennant squeaked by with just a hundred extra votes to pick up the win.

"Over a decade after he left the TARDIS behind and after nearly 50,00 votes were cast, it's clear that David Tennant is still Doctor Who fans' perfect 10!" said RadioTimes.com's Huw Fullerton. "But with Jodie Whittaker hot on his heels and a great showing for other recent Doctors like Peter Capaldi, it looks like fans also now hold other Time Lords close to their heart(s)."

In third place on the poll is Peter Capaldi, Whittaker's predecessor and the Twelfth Doctor, who claimed about 18 percent of the final vote. Two more fan favorite actors rounded out the rest of the top five, as Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith -- Tennant's successor -- landed in the No. 4 spot with 16 percent of the fan votes. In fifth place is the Fourth Doctor, Tom Baker, who ended up with an eight percent total.

Of course, all of the other actors have their fans, even if they're not topping the list of the most popular Doctor actors from the show. In order, the poll's rankings of the rest of the Doctor Who actors are as follows: William Hartnell (First Doctor), Paul McGann (Eighth Doctor), Christopher Eccleston (Ninth Doctor), Jon Pertwee (Third Doctor), Patrick Troughton (Second Doctor), Sylvester McCoy (Seventh Doctor), Colin Baker (Sixth Doctor), and Peter Davison (Fifth Doctor).

Longtime fans of the sci-fi series will remember that Tennant first began playing the Doctor in 2005, assuming the role from one-season actor Christopher Eccleston. He'd leave the show as a series regular in 2010, though he'd revisit Doctor Who in 2013 for the show's 50th anniversary special. Since 2016, he has also continued to voice the Tenth Doctor in a series of audio plays from Big Finish Productions. Several more releases featuring Tennant in the role are also on the way, and the company has also announced that Eccleston will soon be back as the Ninth Doctor for his own audio plays as well.

As for the series, Whittaker is still going strong as the Thirteenth Doctor since stepping into the franchise in 2017. She will soon start filming her next season in the role, and a holiday special is set to bring her back before the end of the year. Considering she came so very close to being named as the most popular Doctor in the new poll, it doesn't seem that Whittaker will be going anywhere for a while.
