Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con had one final surprise up its sleeve on Sunday when BBC America released the first-look teaser of the highly anticipated Doctor Who Christmas Special. In addition the trailer of Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor was also premiered much to the delight of all of the attendees. The Doctor Who Christmas Special teaser was exciting for more reasons than just seeing some footage for the upcoming show. Rumors of the return of a fan favorite character returning was on the mind of pretty much everybody in Hall H.

The Christmas Special teaser comes to us via the official BBC America YouTube channel and It reveals that Peter Capaldi's final episode of Doctor Who this Christmas will feature Pearl Mackie as Bill Potts and is titled 'Twice Upon a Time.' Viewers will have to wait until Christmas to discover exactly how Bill, who will appear throughout the episode, makes her return. The news came after much speculation from fans on whether Pearl Mackie would make a return for the Christmas Special. The general assumption was that her character Bill was gone for good, but the BBC played coy when asked about the potential return of Bill.

It was also revealed that the special will co-star Mark Gatiss in a guest role - as a World War One soldier, known so far only as 'The Captain.' As previously revealed in the closing moments of the season finale, the special will feature Peter Capaldi's current Doctor team up with the First Doctor, played by David Bradley. The biggest clue to the plot of this year's Christmas special came in the closing moments of the episode when Capaldi's character struggled out of the Tardis into a snowy wasteland and came face to face with the original Doctor. And after that Peter Capaldi's 12th Doctor will become the 13th Doctor, played by Jodie Whittaker, at the end of the Doctor Who Christmas Special.

Whittaker as stated previously will take over as the new Doctor and will be the first female to take over the role. The decision to put a female in the role has caused a bit of controversy amongst fans of the show and the media. But thankfully the change won't happen until after the special so hopefully all fans can enjoy their Doctor Who Christmas Special without worrying about the gender of a fictional character.

Though we won't know how the Doctor and Bill are reunited until the Christmas Special, this is definitely an early Christmas present for fans of the show. BBC America's Doctor Who panel in Hall H on Sunday, July 23, featured Peter Capaldi, Pearl Mackie, Matt Lucas, Michelle Gomez, Mark Gatiss and lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat. The Doctor Who Christmas Special is set to air on BBC America fittingly on Christmas Day, 2017 and will be the 13th overall Christmas Special in the show's long history.
