Doctor Who just made history by bringing in the first female Time Lord to the beloved sci-fi series. Jodie Whittaker was announced as the new Doctor earlier this year, but she officially made her debut on the Doctor Who Christmas special, Twice Upon a Time. And if you missed it, or if you just want to see it all over again, you can watch the Thirteenth Doctor make her on-screen debut in the video below.

Peter Capaldi ended his run as the twelfth Doctor during Twice Upon a Time. He had a good run, but the BBC decided that they wanted to go in a new direction following his tenure. So, they brought in Jodie Whittaker to take his place and last night, at the very end of the Christmas special, we got to see her Doctor in action for the first time. Even if you haven't seen Twice Upon a Time yet, beyond seeing the regeneration, this clip doesn't actually contain a ton of other spoilers for the episode. So you should be able to watch it and still enjoy the episode just fine.

As far as fanbases go, Doctor Who ranks very high up there in terms of passionate fans. And sometimes that passion gets a little ugly. Such was the case when it was announced that Jodie Whittaker is going to be the new Time Lord in Doctor Who season 11. Many embraced the change, but there was a very loud contingent of those online who voiced their distaste for the decision. The BBC was unwavering, as evidenced by the latest Christmas special, and even released a statement a few months back regarding the backlash. Jodie Whittaker is the Doctor, like it or not, Doctor Who fans.

"Since the first Doctor regenerated back in 1966, the concept of the Doctor as a constantly evolving being has been central to the programme. The continual input of fresh ideas and new voices across the cast and the writing and production teams has been key to the longevity of the series. The Doctor is an alien from the planet Gallifrey and it has been established in the show that Time Lords can switch gender. As the Controller of BBC Drama has said, Jodie is not just a talented actor but she has a bold and brilliant vision for her Doctor. She aced it in her audition both technically and with the powerful female life force she brings to the role. She is destined to be an utterly iconic Doctor. We hope viewers will enjoy what we have in store for the continuation of the story."

Not only is Doctor Who season 11 going to feature a brand new, female version of the Doctor, but there's going to be a new companion and a new showrunner, in the form of Chris Chibnall, who's taking over for Steven Moffat. Indeed, there's change on the horizon for Doctor Who, but the response to the first bit of Jodie Whittaker seems to be quite positive.
