Bad news, Dirk Gently. And bad news for those who worked on the show, because they're going to need to find a new gig. Following the Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency season 2 finale, it's been announced that BBC America will not renew the show. So those hoping to see Dirk Gently season 3 next year are out of luck. Probably. Here's what BBC America had to say about the decision to cancel the show in a statement.

"We are beyond proud of this brilliant original series and so appreciative of the outstanding team behind it including Max Landis, Samuel Barnett, Elijah Wood, and many many others. It was a privilege to work with this talented and passionate group of writers, producers and actors on these two seasons of Dirk. Thanks also to the passionate fans who embraced this fantastically novel world."

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, commonly referred to as just Dirk Gently, centers on the titular holistic detective who investigates cases involving the supernatural. The series, which ran for a total of 18 episodes, is based on the Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency novel series, written by Douglas Adams and published by Simon and Schuster in 1987. Adams wrote two novels, with the sequel, The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul published in 1988. A third book, The Salmon of Doubt: Hitchhiking the Galaxy One Last Time, was published in 2002 after Adams' death, but wasn't a complete novel. So there wasn't likely a whole lot more source material for the show to draw on, were it to continue. Though, there's a small chance we could see a third season happen.

Even though Dirk Gently isn't available on Netflix for U.S. subscribers, the series was a joint venture between BBC America and Netflix. Episodes first aired on BBC America and were made available to Netflix subscribers outside of the U.S. shortly after. Netflix has a history of saving shows from cancellation and, since they co-produce the show, it's possible they could work out a deal for Dirk Gently season 3. There's currently no talk of such a thing happening, but it's not hard to imagine Netflix doing something like that. They're going to be dumping money into original programming in 2018, so why not do Dirk Gently season 3?

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency was created and written by Max Landis (Chronicle), with Robert Cooper serving as showrunner. Samuel Barnett starred as the titular detective, with Elijah Wood playing his reluctant assistant. The show also features Jade Eshet, Hannah Marks, Mpho Koaho, Fiona Dourif, Dustin Milligan, Michael Eklund, Osric Chau, Viv Leacock and Zak Santiago. Deadline doesn't offer a lot of hope when it comes to a possible third season elsewhere, but stranger things have happened. At the very least, maybe Dirk Gently will finally make its way to Netflix in the U.S. now that the series has concluded.
