A teaser trailer for Descendants 3 was launched during the Night of Heroes on the Disney Channel last night. The popular musical franchise is officially coming back, but not until summer 2019, and more importantly, it teases that we might finally learn the identity of Mal's (Dove Cameron) dad. The mystery of Mal's dad has been one fans have been trying to solve since the debut of The Descendants in July 2015. Though the clip was only 30 seconds long, it was more than enough to satisfy fans who have been waiting for an official announcement since last summer, when Descendants 2 debuted.

The Descendants 2 ended on a cliffhanger, but it was hinted that the franchise would return. In The Descendants 3 teaser, Mal, who is the daughter of Sleeping Beauty villain Maleficent, is shown strolling through the forest towards a strange light. When Mal reaches the light, it turns out to be an orb that whispers her name. Mal looks surprised and asks, "Dad?" And then the teaser is over. Fans now have over a year to try and solve the mystery of Mal's father.

Kenny Ortega (High School Musical) is directing The Descendants 3 and just like the other installments, he will also choreograph and executive produce. Stars Dove Cameron, Cameron Boyce, Booboo Stewart, Mitchell Hope, China Anne McClain, and Sofia Carson are also set to return. Carson talked about how excited she is to play Evie again and stated that the sequel is for the fans. She had this to say.

"I truly cannot wait to be Evie again. I fell in love with Evie three years ago, and I am honored to continue telling her inspiring story with Kenny and our cast for the beautifully wicked journey that will be Descendants 3. To our beautiful fans all over the world, Thank you for making this happen! This is all for you."

The Disney Channel had been promoting the Night of Heroes all week, promising a special look at Infinity War, A Wrinkle in Time, and The Incredibles 2. The Infinity War special look was nothing more than the footage from the previous trailers that we've already seen, except that it added audio of Thor screaming this time around. Marvel fans were not happy about that tease. On the other hand, The Descendants 3 trailer came out as a complete surprise and though the audiences are quite different from the Marvel crew, it's still exciting news.

The Descendants 3 is over a year away, but it will undoubtedly be a huge hit like the previous installments. The last movie drew over 8 million viewers during its multi network premiere. Who will Mal's dad turn out to be and what does this magical orb have to do with it? We'll have to wait and see when it premieres. Until then, you can check out the short teaser for The Descendants 3 below, thanks to the Disney Descendants YouTube channel.
