The end is in sight for the fan favorite Netflix Original Dead to Me, as the streamer has announced the series has been renewed for a third and final season. Word of the renewal and cancelation comes straight from Netflix on Twitter, posting a photo of stars Linda Cardellini and Christina Applegate with a message confirming the end is nigh. ""The Brilliant Dead to Me has been renewed for a third (and final) season!" the caption bluntly proclaims. You can take a look at the tweet below.

For big fans of the series, this news might be bittersweet, as it confirms that the end of the show is in sight, but the writers will have their chance to end the series properly. After all, there's nothing worse than when a series gets cut off with a cliffhanger, leaving fans to use their imagination to think of how things may have ended for the characters they'd invested in since the start of the show. Three seasons might seem a bit short for fans that feel Dead to Me still has the potential to last much longer, but three full seasons of a series is still much better than one or two.

Created by Liz Feldman, Dead to Me premiered on Netflix in 2019. In addition to Cardellini and Applegate, the series also stars Edward Asner, James Marsden, Max Jenkins, Sam McCarthy, and Luke Roessler. Feldman, Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, and Jessica Elbaum produce the series. The show has proven to be a big hit with viewers and critics alike, boasting strong ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and earning Applegate an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Netflix doesn't release exact viewership numbers, but the first season was reportedly watched by over 30 million users within a month of its premiere.

Dead to Me follows widowed real estate agent Jen (Applegate), whose husband is killed by a hit-and-run driver. Attending a therapy support group for bereft spouses, Jen meets and befriends Judy (Cardellini) -- the hit-and-run driver responsible for the death of Jen's husband. The series explores the challenges of their unique friendship as Jen unravels the mystery of what happened to her husband along with Judy's involvement. Somehow, as the truth comes out, things only get much, much crazier from there.

There's no word yet on when the third and final season of Dead to Me will premiere on Netflix, but as the first season premiered in May 2019 and season two came along in May 2020, it would seem that May 2021 would be a good estimate. Of course, that will depend on how soon the new episodes will go into production, given the movie and television delays that have taken place this year. In any case, it should help for fans to know that new episodes are coming, although they will be the last. Let's just hope the show is able to stick to the landing with season three, after the wild ride that the first two seasons has already taken us on. This news comes to us from Netflix on Twitter.
