Marvel Television and Netflix announced that actress, Joanne Whalley (Edge of Darkness, The Borgias) has been cast in the third season of Marvel's Daredevil where she will portray Sister Maggie, a strong-willed nun who speaks her mind and cares deeply about Matt's safety. She joins returning cast including, Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock), Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), Elden Henson (Foggy Nelson), as well as Vincent D'Onofrio reprising his popular role as Wilson Fisk. All episodes of the first two seasons of Marvel's Daredevil are now streaming on Netflix. Here's what Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer and Marvel's Head of Television, had to say about the casting in a brief statement.

"We are big fans of Joanne's work and are fortunate that someone of her caliber will be joining our already talented family."

This casting news will not come as a surprise to those who watched The Defenders, since Sister Maggie is the name that was called out by the other nuns to help with Matt Murdock, who nearly died during the climactic battle. In the comic books, she nurses Matt Murdock back to health, and it is later revealed that she is actually Matt Murdock's long-lost mother, but there is no indication yet that the TV series will follow this same comics thread. Here's what Erik Oleson, Showrunner and Executive Producer, had to say in his statement.

"Joanne is a rare talent and a terrific creative collaborator. Watching her bring her role to life has the writers all pinching ourselves."

Production started in New York City on Daredevil Season 3 in November, and aside from Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin returning, Wilson Bethel has come aboard to play a mysterious FBI agent that is believed to be Sin-Eater. Many fans had hoped that this series would eventually adapt the popular Born Again comics story, with Charlie Cox essentially confirming that at least some elements of the Born Again story will be featured in Season 3, but they won't be adapting it "page-for-page."

Whalley has graced the big and small screens for decades. Known for such films as Scandal and Willow, she has also been a firm fixture on British TV screens including the hit series, The Singing Detective and the conspiracy drama, The Edge of Darkness, for which she received a BAFTA nomination. Joanne can currently be seen starring as The Duchess of Burgundy in the Starz series The White Princess.

Marvel's Daredevil follows the journey of Matt Murdock, who was blinded as a young boy but imbued with extraordinary senses, now fighting against injustice by day as a lawyer, and by night as the super hero Daredevil in modern day Hell's Kitchen, New York City. The third season of Marvel's Daredevil is Executive Produced by series Showrunner Erik Oleson (Man In The High Castle) and Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods), along with Jeph Loeb (Marvel's Jessica Jones, Marvel's Luke Cage) and Jim Chory (Marvel's Jessica Jones, Marvel's Luke Cage). Marvel's Daredevil is produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios for Netflix.
