Bloody Disgusting has reported today that Universal Studios is looking to resurrect Anne Rice's popular novel series The Vampire Chronicles, which came to the big screen in 1994 with Neil Jordan's Interview with the Vampire, starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, and then hit the direct-to-DVD market in the Michael Rymer sequel Queen Of The Damned, starring Aaliyah and Stuart Townsend. The biggest revelation about this news is that Robert Downey Jr. is eyeing the role of Lestat, the vampire originally portrayed by Tom Cruise, and then later recast with Stuart Townsend in the lesser follow-up.

There is no word on how Universal plans to role out this proposed series of films. The first film would be titled The Vampire Chronicles, with Downey Jr. portraying Lestat Du Lioncort, a nobleman-turned-vampire leaving in the 18th century.

We'll alert you as soon as an official announcement is made about both the film, and Robert Downey Jr.'s part in it.
