Castle Rock season 2 just got a whole lot more interesting for Stephen King fans. The sophomore season of Hulu's series will be based on King's iconic 1987 work Misery, which was previously adapted for the big screen in 1990 with an iconic performance from Kathy Bates as Annie Wilkes, with James Caan as author Paul Sheldon. This time around, it will be Cloverfield and Masters of Sex star Lizzy Caplan taking on the role of Wilkes.

According to a new report, Season 2 will explore a feud between warring clans that comes to a boil when budding psychopath Annie Wilkes gets detained in the town of Castle Rock. While this series will play a lot with interconnectivity within Stephen King's universe, this season will stand on its own from the first season, making it more of an anthology series. showrunner Dustin Thomason had this to say about what to expect from the new season.

"Each season is going to be its own self-contained story: beginning, middle and end. But I think that just as the books do, we want to surprise viewers with the ways in which the stories intersect. Just as the places the characters pop up in very unexpected ways throughout the books, that's the kind of anthology that we would like to tell. One of the things about the King universe, or multiverse, is that some very strange things can happen when it comes to the ways that the stories unfold, and hopefully there will be surprises along the way in terms of how the anthology works in that way. It's pretty delicious that Kathy Bates played both Dolores Claiborne and Annie Wilkes, when you really think about that question in the movie adaptations. But I think that there's something for us about being faithful to the way that Steve does it in the books, that almost feels like the anthology format has already been laid out for us."

Other new cast members to board the project include Tim Robbins (The Shawshank Redemption), Garrett Hedlund (Mosaic), Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips), Yusra Warsama (Call the Midwife) and Matthew Alan (13 Reasons Why). Perhaps most exciting is the addition of Elsie Fisher, who broke out in last year's critically-heralded Eighth Grade. It's also rather exciting to have Robbins playing someone new from the Stephen King universe, having previously portrayed Andy Dufresne.

Tim Robbins will play Reginald "Pop" Merrill, who appeared in the story The Sun Dog and described as the famed patriarch of Stephen King's iconic crime family who is dying of cancer and at odds with his family. Garrett Hedlund will play John "Ace" Merrill, from The Body (which inspired Stand By Me) and Needful Things, a legendary bully in Castle Rock who is taking over his uncle Pop's business, which threatens a delicate peace with Jerusalem's Lot. Matthew Alan is on board as Chris Merrill, a new character created for the show. He's Pop's nephew and Ace's brother who struggles to keep the peace between his family and the Somali community.

There is no word on who the other new cast members will be playing at this time. Currently, it isn't clear if any season 1 characters will appear in season 2. Hulu has not yet announced a premiere date for Castle Rock season 2, but we'll be sure to keep you posted as further details are made available.
