Nine months after the conclusion of Season 4, Netflix has announced that Bojack Horseman Season 5 will premiere on September 14th. Additionally, the streaming platform also released a puzzling first look photo that features the titular character on the ground with a gunshot wound, inflicted by a lizard woman brandishing the gun. Some believe this is part of Bojack's new Princess Carolyn-produced series Philbert.

In true BoJack Horseman-fashion, the Season 5 announcement was first made in an unorthodox manner, which Netflix was able to quickly swoop in and capitalize on. It's not clear if the fifth season of BoJack Horseman was going to be announced today or not, but a fan of the Netflix animated comedy asked the official show Twitter account when we can all expect to see Season 5. Apparently, this is a pretty common occurrence, which prompted a quick response. The response nonchalantly announced that BoJack Horseman is returning this September and then asked to not be bothered about the matter again. The response reads.

"wooowwww congratulations you are the 10000000 person to ask that question your prize is the answer sept 14th now please stop asking me."

As soon as the premiere date was announced, Netflix rolled out an official press release along with the aforementioned first look image. It seems that Netflix and the BoJack Horseman Twitter account were just waiting for someone to ask the question again so that they could deliver the perfect response. Regardless of how the promotional campaign was set up, fans of the hit series are excited to finally have an official release date. However, the first image raises a bunch of questions, which was more than likely the intent.

As previously mentioned, the Season 5 BoJack Horseman image features the character wounded from a gunshot, while wearing a badge. Is BoJack a detective in the new season? Who is the lizard woman that shot him, and why did he get shot? Is it a dream sequence? This has led to speculation that Season 5 will go off on a time jumping detour like the previous season. It's also entirely possible that the alcoholic horse is trying to get his acting career off of the ground again, which would make for some pretty interesting storylines.

While the Season 5 BoJack Horseman first look photo is a mystery, it's fun to have something new to ponder while everyone waits for the premiere on September 14th. Luckily, there's only a few months to go before the show returns, which means that a trailer and other promotional clips aren't too far away from hitting the internet. San Diego Comic-Con seems like a good time to release a trailer of some kind, or at the very least, some more images that might help piece together the bizarre first image. While we wait to find out, you can check out the initial social media post that announced Season 5 below, thanks to the BoJack Horseman Twitter account.
