Syfy is developing a new TV series based on the classic poem Beowulf, with Matt Greenberg (1408) coming on board to write the script.

The Olde English poem, whose author remains unknown to this day, centers on a Scandanavian hero who battles with a monster named Grendel. The poem is said to have originated sometime between the 8th and 11th Century, and is still considered to be one of the most important pieces of literature. This new TV adaptation will focus on Beowulf's rise to power and his growing feud with Grendel.

Universal Cable Productions and Omnifilm Entertainment are producing, with Brian Hamilton, Michael Chechik, Matt Greenberg, Andrew Cosby and Paulo De Oliveira serving as executive producers.

The story was most recently adapted into the 2007 motion-capture film Beowulf, which was directed by Robert Zemeckis.
