I don't know about you, but I used to love the TV show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. I even have the theme song on my favorite playlist. So I was super psyched to see a fan made trailer that came out yesterday called Bel Air. You gotta watch it if you haven't seen it yet. It looks quite a bit grittier than the original show. The trailer has the same basic storyline of a kid from Philly that goes to live with his rich Uncle in the posh LA neighborhood of Bel Air, except this trailer has a little more grit than the original TV show did.

Will Smith, the new "fresh prince" gets called out by his mom for going down the wrong path because the "fresh prince" gets in a fight with some gang members and gets arrested for carrying a gun for his own protection. His mom then decides to send him to..........you got it, Bel Air, where he meets the cast of characters first introduced in the now iconic TV show: Uncle Phil, Hillary, and of course Carlton. Will makes friends at a record store with a kid named "Jazz", being a nod to the great DJ Jazzy Jeff who produced the soundtrack of the original show. The most amusing part of the trailer to me was when Will goes out for the basketball team. The coach at the Bel Air Academy is, needless to say, impressed with Will's skills and quickly welcomes the newcomer on board.

Director and Cinematographer Morgan Cooper did the trailer and put it up on Youtube for everyone to watch. After the trailer dropped there seemed to be an outcry for Netflix to use Morgan's storyline to make a full blown series for Bel Air. There are some other independent players, Amazon, Apple, Hulu in the mix that could make this into a series if they wanted to, but the collective conscious seemed focus on Netflix being the one to bring the story to life.

The series itself, if it were produced, could easily become a wellspring for established musical artists to showcase their music, as well as a platform for new musical artists to show off some chops. The original Fresh Prince show was well known for showcasing flashy, in style clothes, so if this series were made it could easily feature clothing of new upcoming designers, and of course all the current designer icons like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, etc... In the trailer itself the clothes have several pop references to Meek Mills, so there is also a social change, or a social movement angle that the producers could feature in the Bel Air storyline.

Now my theory is that Netflix is probably already thinking about doing the show. They may even have several episodes, or a general story arc crafted right now waiting to be shot. To test the waters they threw Morgan Cooper some money to make a slick looking trailer to drop on people. Now if people get excited, like they seem to be doing, then Netflix or whoever backed the trailer has some sense of how popular the new show Bel Air may be. Either way, the trailer is worth the watch, and the show could become quite popular if done well. For a short while, it looke like NBC was getting ready to reboot or revive The Fresh Prince, but Will Smith decalred that would never happen after the project stalled for various reasons.
