Batwoman star Javicia Leslie says she is honored to take on the role. Series producers Caroline Dries and Sarah Schechter were joined by cast members Rachel Skarsten, Meagan Tandy, Camrus Johnson, and Nicole Kang, along with Leslie, for the DC FanDome panel earlier this afternoon. In addition to teasing what's in store for season 2, the cast and crew were there to welcome Leslie to the cast and introduce her to the world. It's an honor that the actress does not take lightly. She explains.
"You know, when I read the character description, it was definitely me. I love the idea that it's goofy meets badass meets a person that doesn't like to be told what to do, a person that does not like to follow the rules. It's really hard for me sometimes when it comes to like, 'Okay, well you have to do it this way as Javicia' versus what you have to do when you're an actress and you have to present yourself. So I love the fact that Ryan is who I am, a hot mess."
Javicia Leslie is taking over for Ruby Rose, who exited Batwoman after one season. Rose and the producers came to amicable decision when it came to her exit and she's excited to see what Leslie brings to the table. She says, "I was so proud and so happy when I was told who would be replacing me. I'm just really stoked and I'm definitely going to watch the next season as well and see how it all comes together." As for Javicia Leslie, getting the Batwoman role was a dream come true. She had this to say.
"I'm really into action. This has literally been my dream. It's so funny, because in May, I did an interview and I said one of my future goals, and one of my biggest dreams, is becoming a superhero. I wanted to be a Black superhero; I don't get to see that that often. And then a month later, I become the first Black Batwoman. It really hits the nail on the head [to say], 'Speak your dreams. Speak your affirmations, and truly just know that whatever you want to do, if you continue to move towards it, it can happen.'"
As of this writing, Javicia Leslie has not even been fitted for her Batwoman costume, which will have a different look from the one Ruby Rose wore in season 1. Leslie says, "we were talking about doing costume fittings very soon. That way we can be prepared as soon as we get [back to production]." Season 2 is scheduled to premiere in early 2021, but it is unclear if that will be able to happen due to the public health crisis.
One of the reasons Javicia Leslie not been fitted for the new Batwoman suit is because it hasn't even been designed yet. "I know Caroline and I were talking about how important it is that if we're going to have a Black Batwoman, that she needs to be, like, a sista when she becomes Batwoman," Leslie said with a chuckle. "It's important for her to feel like the silhouette of her could still look like that, with natural textured hair and things like that." To prepare for new suit ideas, Leslie has been sending producers fan art from social media.
Batwoman producers also teased that Kate Kane will have a mysterious disappearance at the start of season 2. They did not go into details, but Caroline Dries did not that Javicia Leslie's Ryan character will have a major role to play for the older characters. "Ryan will ironically, ultimately, unite the Kane family," says. "There all of these strands of connection that she brings to them."
