Former Jackass star Bam Margera was arrested over the weekend for allegedly driving under the influent. Though the 38-year-old professional skateboarder has had a history with alcohol, this is his first DUI arrest. Margera has been released on bail, which was reportedly set at $15,000. Apparently, Margera made the arrest rather easy on officers, who weren't even planning on pulling him over in the first place.
Reportedly, Bam Margera was driving past several California Highway Patrol officers at around 8 a.m. who were said to be in the middle of stopping someone else. Margera slowed down to talk to the officers who noticed he was using his cell phone. This prompted an interaction between Margera and the officers and, during the conversation, they smelled alcohol on his breath. They then asked him to pull over and "conducted standard field sobriety tests". He was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. The $15,000 bail is also said to be about $10,000 higher than usual for a first offense. At the present time, it hasn't been made clear why his bail was set so much higher.
Bam Margera rose to fame, initially as a skateboarder, but really took off as part of the Jackass crew on MTV, later starring in the trilogy of Jackass movies and in his own TV series, Viva La Bam. Last year, he revealed that he had a years-long battle with alcohol and that learning to skateboard again, after suffering from bone spurs, helped him recover from his addiction. He also welcomed his first child just two weeks ago with his wife, Nicole Boyd. Here's what he had to say about his addiction in an interview from September of last year.
"I took a five-year hiatus from skating because I had bone spurs, so instead I was making money by doing nightclub appearances, which basically was shooting photos and taking shots with the locals. So I was s***bag wasted every night, and eventually was like, 'This has to stop.' Once I woke up in my own puke and p-, I knew I had to cut it off. I just reached a point where drinking got really old. I just looked at the big picture, like, 'What am I doing? I'm not doing anything, just sitting in a bar in Westchester cracking jokes with the locals.' So I stopped."
It looks like Bam Margera has had something of a relapse, given this DUI arrest. In 2011, Margera's Jackass co-star and best friend, Ryan Dunn, was killed in a drunk driving incident. The news of Margera's arrest was initially reported by TMZ and later confirmed to People by Officer Juan Galvan, a public relations officer for CHP. Margera has yet to comment on the arrest and his alleged DUI charges since his release.
